Here's the notes that I got on this particular dot point:

In Aust, soil salinity naturally occurs because:

a) There was an inland sea in the Ordivician
b) There is sporadic rain
c) There is extreme heat which causes evaporation
d) Inward drainage means dissolved salts from weathering and erosion go inland

  • Therefore Lake Eyre Basin is naturally saline as rivers such as the Diamantina, Barcoo and Cooper's Creek cut through salty sediments - salt in rivers and aquifers.
  • In Aust ~30m ha is naturally saline
  • Note (i) that the inland sea left saline sediments as it receded - Central WA --> QLD, NSW and VIC.
  • Note (ii) Granitic rocks have high plagioclase and alkali feldspars which release salts (eg. NaCl, MgSO4) into the water-ways
  • In coastal areas salt water from the sea is carried over the land. Evaporation leaves salt.
Hope that helps! Although I'm not entirely sure if I answered your question.
