Can this only be an essay or any text type?

last year it was a speech
so im guessing it can be any

it can be anything, but it's usually an essay. besides which, any other text type would be close enough to an essay (since you have to communicate all the info) that you may as well be mainly prepared for an essay

It's not "usually" an essay. It can be anything and it's better to be prepared for all text types rather than depending on it to be an essay.
