26 Oct 2008, 2:40 PM ![]() | Re: Creative Writing: Hints well this topic has given me some ideas for when i finally write it. but i have a huge problem. i can easily write pages of basic story, but i cant fit a good journey into it. my teachers keeps on saying the journey shouldnt be blindingly ovbious in how it affects the character/s, but... i dunno. any ideas on how to transform a simple story into one with a good journey? |

1 May 2009, 1:32 PM ![]() | Re: Creative Writing: Hints so in class, our teacher gave an exercise where he wrote a simple word on the board, in this instance, it was beach. as a class, we had to say the first things that came to our mind when we saw/heard the word beach. then, creating a mind map thingy, he wrote each word that linked off it. then, he tld us that we know had to write a creative peice about the beach and journey's WITHOUT using any of the words that we had written on the board. so for example, beach = waves, sun, sand, sunscreen, blue, splashing, seagulls. etc. we had to create something that did not include any of those words. at the end our creative writings weren't very long, but the content was a lot better compared to our trials. soidunno, you's can try that idea if you like, i did it a couple if tims since, and it has helped a bit. good luck!

i guess you don't have to GLUE yourself as such to the stimulus, and we do have SOME freedom with the response. i was wondering, what are the chances that it's a feature article? or something non-narrative-like this year? | |

Today, 11:28 AM Blog Entries: 1 ![]() | Re: Creative Writing: Hints So in writing how are you supposed to know what kind of language is correct and what type is not? My teacher said that I tend to overflow with sophisticated language. Anyone got tips here(other then reading) for increasing vocabulary?

24 Oct 2009, 10:42 AM ![]() | Re: Creative Writing: Hints I'm just coming up to my half-yearly's this week and I've already got a basic plan. I know this year the topic is on belonging, but this is such a broad topic so just about anything can be incorporated into it. If you get a picture to write about, is the object/focus of the picture alone or is there many? Is the object/focus different to the objects around it? You can easily incorporate the stimulus into any creative writing piece, whether that be a diary entry, an article or a simple novel based structure. For me, I'm planning on doing a diary entry (I've never done one before so this is going to be interesting) and incorporating that with whatever stimulus I choose in the exam. My focus in the plan is on a girl's contemplation on whether she belongs or doesn't belong and what can be done to change her standing if she doesn't belong. I have a twist at the end but that's for me to know. When my exams are over and I get back the results I will post how I did and maybe even what I wrote. Wish me luck!

5 Nov 2009, 3:13 PM ![]() | Adding to that this post, research is vital, you need to know the LINGO or JARGON behind the way your character speaks in the era, the setting ... etc for a very basic example compare "She got on a plane and stepped off on a small island in a big ocean." to "She got on the QANTAS JFK 248 and stepped off in New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean" You'll sound much more competent, researched, thought out and the marker wont mark you down for the lack of sophistication. :-) Steph xx P.s. number 2 quote is a fake airline but it looks real... I made it up the quote for the purpose of the example but it is essential that you research! |

Today, 12:11 PM ![]() | Re: Creative Writing: Hints "Look at stimulus --> LINK!!!!!" I have spoken to HSC markers and they have said that linking to stimulus isn't most important. You can have a quick sentence link and go on to talk about your own creative. Most students don't even bother with the stimulus. I admit it is important to link to stimulus; however it is more important to get a good story through. |

18 Jun 2009, 7:46 PM ![]() | Re: Creative Writing: Hints Do you think anyone could post up an extract of how a good story should be structured? I had a prepared story for my half yearly. and the stimulus was to pick one of the pictures (out of four). and it made it so much easier because i just adapted my story to fit to the closest picture.. really good info on this thread..

| aww.. baby raccoon ^^ | Re: Creative Writing: Hints Regarding structure, look at different short stories and identify similar patterns in the way they have been written. There is no be all and end all "perfect" story pattern (or our lives would read like newspapers!). If you're really struggling, think about drawing up a timeline of your story: what happens in chronological order? Then work out how you want to present that order to the audience. Remember stories don't necessarily have to be in time-correct order, nor do they have to end cleanly ("the twist" ending).
