Hey when people on this forum talking about scaling, are they talking about the UAI scaling or HSC mark scaling?

It's easy to get confused.

There are two paths followed by your raw marks:

raw marks -> scaling -> scaled marks -> UAI

raw marks -> aligning -> aligned marks -> BOS Record of Achievement

An 'HSC mark' (where 'aligned' or 'scaled' hasn't been specified) is generally taken to mean the aligned HSC mark that appears on the actual certificate awarded by the Board.

The term 'scaling' usually refers to the process used by the Technical Committee on Scaling when calculating UAIs.

The term 'aligning' usually refers to the process used by the Board when adjusting your marks to course standards. For all intents and purposes, it is also a form of scaling - the new label is a lame bureaucratic attempt to abolish scaling, and also serves to (supposedly) avoid confusion.

I think both.

Usually when people ask about UAI predictions they're talking about UAI scaling and when they're asking about what Bands they fall in they're talking about HSC mark scaling.

So doing ok on a high scaled subject is better then a very good result on a low scaled subj for UAI??

Not necessarily. They would most likely be the same.

Your position in a course and the scaling for that course (demonstrated by the scaled mean) each play a significant role in the determination of your final scaled mark.
