I was just wondering if anyone knew what sort of raw mark for Paper 1 and 2 gets you a band six. I know it changes every year, but a rough estimate would be nice.

As a very rough (and not entirely accurate) guide, it goes something like 90-100 = band 6.

That is the HSC mark that you need between 90 and 100 to get a band six, but i was wondering about the raw marks.
I don't think you would need 90-100% in the exam to get a band six, thats 13.5/15 for all paper one sections and 18/20 for all paper two sections. Thats a pretty high standard.

If i recall, (and i probably don't) i think in the 04 forum they concluded that 83/84 raw mark equalled band 6, after completing the FOI precedure to get their raw marks.

You'll need to check this for yourself though.

Re: Raw marks to aim for

Its suprisingly not that high:
I'm personally aiming for band 5 in english so I can only tell u what u needed to get in 04 to get a moderated mark of 80/100 and that was:

30/45 paper one.
45/60 paper two.

Giving u a total of 75/105 needed (actually I think it was a tiny bit lower in 2004 closer to 73/105, so 75/105 is probably preeety spot on for this years HSC).

Soo without doing any statistics, off the top of my head I'd imagine a bottom band six ( 90/100) will probably be about 83/105 this year.

Or 34/45 paper one.
and 49/60 paper two.

EDIT: I didn't even look at the post above this lol... :)

Would you guys say though that it is quite achievable. As english at my school has been marked extremly hard is it still marked very hard or easy would you say?

Your school should mark you harder than in the HSC but yiu can't really know if they do unless they ask. I know my teacher makes a point of being a very hard marker because then a 14/20 for her translates as a 16/17 out of 20 in the HSC.

Thanks that helps alot. I was quite confused why everyone in the entire year was battling to even get an A in some assesment tasks and such.

Would you say if you got band 6 in the school certificate you can pretty much do it in year 12?

Comparing the SC with the HSC is like comparing marshmallows with the quantum theory.

I thought so. I am just attempting to grasp a concept of the possible scores I may attain in year 12 and if they will be enough to get my uai needed.

i agree with dagwoman that comparing the sc and hsc is like "marshmallows and quantum theory". BUT; a similar portion of people get a band 6 in the sc as they do in the hsc; ie. the spread of marks is similar. Although this does not mean what u got in the sc is at all representative of how u will go in the hsc, it shows u how many people etc. are likely to get into each band.

It was a chance to get all psyched up about how smart you were after seeing all those band 6's...and then going to year 12 and doing crap.

not everyone goes on to finish year 12 - SC marks would be all that people who drop out after year 10 have.
