in another thread it said to some here, and i don't think anyone else has, so what's the deal with the scaling with the 2u exam, if everyone performs badly?

If everyone performs badly in the 2U Mathematics paper, it makes absolutely no difference at all.

Unless Ext1 people don't perform badly, in which case it'll benefit Ext1 students (in Ext1 scaling) and in turn Ext2 students (in Ext2 scaling). But overall, no effect on 2U scaling.

so if everyone perfoms badly, there will be no scaling? if all ext1 students perform well, and others badly, then ... ext 1 will get band 6s?

2U would have the same scaling had the people not performed badly. Whether they get Band-6 or not, is BOS's decision. But in terms of UAC and your UAI - *Refers to above 'Edited' post*.

In terms of BOS, they have already decided what raw mark will be aligned to before we even sat the exam.

So whether we found it hard or not doesn't matter. But typically they (the judges) would know whether it would be harder for students to attain high marks, and would probably align better.

The UAC bases its scaling on candidture performance.

ok, so as for 2u scaling, they look at the abilities of the people in the papers and fit them into a band? via what they can and can't do in the outcomes?

so, for example, what if they thought it was an easy exam? if they didn't realise there were twists in the questions?

Yes, btw 'aligned' is a better word than 'scaling' when refering to BOS. Well, in theory, they use the outcomes...

I don't think they would change anything after the exam has been done.

There are a lot of judges going through the paper and discussions about it. I'm sure they would have a fairly good idea of what it will be like.

How the 2002 paper was aligned.

Working independently, each judge considers each examination question and records the mark that they believe a student at the borderline between Bands 5 and 6 is likely to receive on that question.

They decide what mark in each question on the 2002 examination paper would be likely to be scored by the students who produced the responses in the 2001 HSC standards package.

Each judges marks are then added across all examination questions to give a total examination mark corresponding to the borderline (or cut-off) between Band 5 and Band 6 for that judge.

The cut-off marks between Bands 5 and 6 determined by all the judges in the team are then averaged to provide the first estimate of the minimum examination mark required by a student to be aligned to Band 6.

The judges follow these same procedures to determine the cut-offs for each of the other bands.
As you can see its a pretty hefty process they undergo in determining how a subject will align. I'm pretty sure regardless of the outcome of the exam they won't change it unless it was really that significant.

To avoid confusion, you should clarify the responses in this thread by reading the responses in the Alignment VS scaling thread.

If the markers find unexpected (and perfectly valid) responses, the marking criteria will be reviewed accordingly.

Not that we would even know whether they did or not :p

They should re-consider the responses for the 3U dice question -_- everyone has to be up to my standard for that 1 mark :D
