In French Continuers, I'm currently ranked 2nd out of 4 students, but the gap between me and first is around 2 percent. In terms of overall internal marks, basically it goes:

Student rank 1: 93%
Student rank 2 (me): 91%
Student rank 3: around 77%
Student rank 4: around 65%

Could this affect my chances of getting a band 6? Will this mess up my assessment mark? Or will they count the relative space between the marks and ranks and I'll be okay?

They count the relative space. So if you finish 2nd by a narrow margin, your assessment mark will be narrowly lower than the assessment mark of the dude in 1st (which in turn will be the school's highest exam mark in the subject).

The scaling system is self-correcting. You always get the mark you deserve.

If I remember small cohorts performance might actually be judged by your performance in the HSC (Check this out I could be misremembering).

Assuming you and the top student perform strongly in externals (HSC) then it shouldn't impact on you as the top two students are relatively close.
