    Summer Vacation Internship's 2017/2018

As a soon to be penultimate year student, it is approaching the time where I should try out for summer vacation internships opportunities.

Any tips for assessment/aptitude tests, or organisation internships that you'd recommend would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Re: Summer Vacation Internship's 2017/2018

The aptitude tests are pre easy so dw about them - in regards to big4 and below calibre firms. If you have 65+ wam, you can get into any of the big4 service lines with ease except deals/transactions where there are little spots available. The interview process for all b4 is easy. The basic behavioural questions you can find online. Only tip is to fully understand the service line you are applying for if you are applying for the more difficult ones.

But if you are going for MBB or tier 2 consulting, you should start case practice soon. If you're going for IB, make sure you understand basic corporate finance principles - for the interview stages. But if you don't have 75+ wam, some ECs or comp experience in the first place, don't bother wasting your time applying for these guys because there is 0% chance you'll get through (unless you know someone and they vouch for you of course).

Final tip is that networking actually works and is not a myth (Especially to get into the tougher roles) - but it's not necessary

I think it varies alot depending on the nature of the organisation as well as the industry sector. e.g. to land an internship in IB is very different to say big 4 or management consulting.

Challenging roles to take on! Good luck...

I've had a few interns these past few weeks in assurance (although I don't do much audit work nowadays). Hope they had a good experience.

I think you should definitely go for their networking events either hosted in their offices or at your uni and talk to the representatives there to get an idea of what the culture are like, what the people are like, and the process, and whether it is something you really want to do, also have a back up plan, I know personally having visited the headquarters of most of these big firms in the city this week and having networking sessions at all the firms I am going to (or are going to), the admission rate is super low, something like out of 4000 applications, they take like 100 for the entire firm for summer vacations or less. So just be prepared to have a back up plan given such low admission rates.

Leverage any networks that you can & remember that if you can't say "I'll die for this shit" it's unlikely that you'll get a role. Research your sector and practice interview skills whenever you can.

And OP no offence but don't waste your time with applying for the management consulting firms. All the factors are against you. You have a good shot at big 4 advisory though - just not the deals/tas/cf areas

I mean there is an element of truth to it but depending on the firm/culture/etc, there might be differing views on how serious or committed they want you to be in your interview.

Fair enough. The leveraging your networks point is also valid too - but don't use it if you can't guarantee it'll work in your favour. e.g. name dropping someone who has NFI who you are - unless they know you well (and have a positive impression of you), or have prompted their memory recently enough (unfortunately people have namedropped me and my response is often "huh?").

lmao i've heard stories of this happening.

It's all within the realm of common sense. Go in with an "I'll die for this shit" attitude but don't act like Spartacus from the movie 300. Leverage your networks but don't be a moron and namedrop someone that you talked to once at a networking event a year ago.

As far as leveraging networks go; if you haven't worked well on a project/deal together or interacted on a regular basis it probably won't tip in your favour.

What were your thoughts on the recruiting process that you went through? If you had to go through the recruiting process again, what would you do different either in interviews or in your preparation for interviews?

tldr - Overall it was a great recruiting process, as I expected and I would not have done anything different in in the interview or in preparation for it given the circumstance.

Correspondence was adequate, group case study and standard individual interview. The hardest bit was getting the interview in the first place. Networking and relationships was key to getting the shot given the low intake and above average competition (but lower competition than 2nd tier mc or bbib - I don't think mbb provide internships in Australia? not sure). You'd be surprised how many students actually don't bother to network lol

There was a lot of back-to-back interviews within the July+ period (banks) before this particular interview. So naturally I had been preparing for the interviews prior and reused the same behavioural answers and my understanding of m&a and market drivers was adequate. There was little marginal benefit in preparing technically for this interview nor for behavioural questions

But I did need to investigate further just exactly what the role entailed. So this involved reaching out to seniors in the role and meeting with them multiple times within a time span (the networking part - a while before interviews started)

Same answer as above - prepared by finding out exactly what they did, and group case + individual
