Hmm, yes i know i'm in year 10 and i have a long way to go.. But, i am always interested in my career path. I have a big interest in law, but also in computing. I was thinking if i should follow my dads careerpath, or my own.. (My dad works in the IT industry) Is science a pre-requisite for studying IT/computer science in uni? I don't have much background knowledge about the careers in IT/computer science except my dads.. who is a contractor and screams a lot when he is "on call" haha. He does 'mainframe'. Anyways, the thing is ... i have always been "naturally good" with IT. Not to boast or anything, but its something that is a part of my "characteristics". e.g, i've always been involved with gifted and talented programs involving IT etc. So yeah, i'm fairly good with computers.. But i'm extremley bad with science, and my dad said that in his degree he needed chemistry and physics. I am an absoloute failure at science. Anyways.. with law. I love debate and discussion about human rights etc.. So my main question is would i need science to do IT in uni, and what are the career paths?

Doing Mathematics Extension 1 will cover you everything that is required by Computer Science degree beforehand. And I know for a fact that UNSW doesn't require any science at all. However, I did hear that computing engineering may require science.In termsof career with IT, it's really really broad. It may range from system management of a company or to some model development to software programming.

I dunno what ur dad does in the IT industry, but you wont need any chem or physics knowledge to do IT/computer science in uni. if you wanted to study quantum computing or bioinformatics, then you would probably need some knowledge of physics or biology, but IT/comp sci doesnt go near the "pure" sciences.so dont worry too much about the science aspect. good math is all you needas for career paths, I'd say its the wrong thing to be thinking about right now. you shouldn't be choosing a career, you should be choosing to study something that you enjoy. the career just comes naturally at the end.and this is even more true in computing, which is changing all of the time, growing, spreading, evolving. there are far too many different jobs in computing, and many more are being created as the industry develops.if you are fond of an area of specialisation, (like robotics or AI), that would narrow things down, but still the choice would be diverse

Yeah, i get so confused about that. Our careers adviser keeps encouraging us girls to 'know what career path we want now' so we can 'work toward it' and she keeps encouraging us to look up prerequisites as well so we "know what to do to get what we want" So she moulds a lot of us into little air-heads, by pressuring us to "know what we want to do for uni" :/

you should look at uni courses early to make sure you meet any prereq's, eg, if you want to do engineering, you should take 2u maths or higher. so yes, you should look ahead to what uni courses you are interested in, especially if ATAR needed is high, so you know that you need to study hardbut dont confuse this with deciding how your life will turn out. you should definately look at university handbooks and be informed about your choices, just dont think that one wrong move here will mean you are stuck in a job you hate for the next 40 years
