Metalheads not meatheads but scholars

INTELLIGENT teenagers often listen to heavy metal music to cope with the pressures of being talented, according to research.

The results of a study of more than 1000 of the brightest 5 per cent of young people will come as a relief to parents whose offspring revere AC/DC, Iron Maiden and their musical descendants.

Researchers found that, far from being a sign of delinquency and poor academic ability, many adolescent "metalheads" are extremely bright and often use the music to help them deal with the stresses and strains of being gifted social outsiders.

Stuart Cadwallader, a psychologist at the University of Warwick in Coventry, was due to present the findings at the British Psychological Society conference in York today.

"There is literature that links heavy metal to poor academic performance and delinquency, but we found a group that contradicts that," he said. "We are looking at a group with lower than average self-esteem that does not feel quite as well adjusted. They feel more stressed and turn to heavy metal as a way of relieving that stress."

Researchers surveyed 1057 members of the university's National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth - a body whose 120,000 student members are in the top 5 per cent academically in the 11-19 age range. Asked for their favourite type of music, 39 per cent said rock, 18 per cent R&B and 14 per cent pop. Six per cent said heavy metal and a third rated it in their top five. An online discussion was also held with 19 academy members, 17 of whom were heavy metal fans. They spoke of listening to the music to "work off" frustration and anger.

I'd say those who listen to classical music would probably be smarter than metal but only because for some people they reach a point of loving themselves so much they feel a need to connect with the geniuses of the past who 'understand' them.

I listen to metal so I support this research.

hmmmmmm maybe, but couldn't this also be from how they explain their choice of music taste? I don't think merely hearing 'metal' or whatever is going to give too much information, but if they explain it further I think it provides a bit of an insight into their private psyche.

Are you referring to personality or intelligence? I wouldn't say so, for either of them. It's more a question of preference.

I'm currently reading through a book by Lester Bangs called "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung", which is a collection of reviews that he did on music from the 60s-80s. Really clever stuff, and he did reviews mostly on rock and roll.

Depends. If I met someone who immensely enjoyed 50 cent, I'm pretty sure my slight judgement over them is pretty accurate. I could also probably conclude that we have very little in common.

I'm not saying it can illustrate your total personality/intelligence. It can somewhat be a guide, in a general sense. Like if your ipod has only one type of genre, you're probably not that open minded.

You find a girl who likes rihanna and christina aguilera and they're somehow every other girl that likes rihanna and christina aguilera.

But hey. Such perceptions of mine are never set in stone. I suppose too many variables anyway.

Fair call. Though I wouldn't say it's a good thing, to "outline someones personality" purely based on the music they prefer, however I admit to doing it every now and then if I'm really provoked. Don't think I've really met anyone in the flesh that has a similar taste in music to me. A lot of the best friends I have listen to stuff like Dragonforce, The Fray, all manner of stuff that I've no interest in. It is, after all, just music.

One thing that does bother me with teenagers a lot these days is how coveted their music can be to them, they'll dismiss anyone who listens to a different type, and talk about music all day like they'd have a fucking clue.

Maybe the intellectuals, who essentially have little to no friends picked Heavy Metal to make it seem like they were Hardcore, therefore increasing their chances of finding cool friends and "Fitting in".
