Hi guys,

Just a question for those of you who've worked at supermarkets and have had to type in those keycodes for fruits and veggies. How on earth do you memorise so many of them? I've just applied for the IGA near my house and they aren't using the touch screen systems (with pictures heeh!) yet and I saw one girl typing keycodes in so...how do you do it?

Thanks!

well, for one some stuff has the number printed on the sticker

second, if you do it enough, it becomes lodged in the memory

e.g. i used to have to always type in the barcode for tooheys pills because it's brown, hence i know the barcode is 9311890595905

You get used to it.

Like Townie said, there's [usually] a sticker on the fruits which have a PLU that you enter in. Some don't.

Some fruit and vegies have a shortcut key.
1 = bananas
2 = field tomatoes
3 = washed potatoes
etc.

It sucks when some fruits change PLU.. then you gotta memorise another number.

I was thinking if there was some kind of category system like tomatoes start with like '1' cuz there's like so many kinds! Hahhaa. Oh...next thing is to identify what veggies and fruits they are. =p I'm thinking ahead though hehe, I haven't even gotten the job yet! Anyone knows where to get comfortable black shoes and pants? I live in Perth.

I remember when I worked at woolies with produce. I had the touch screen though, so I didn't need to do that. But I always remembered Granny Smiths Apples was like 4149 or something. I always typed in that one. But then one day, i typed it in and it said I couldn't :(

The IGA near my house uses touch screens, I don't know if it has pictures, I've never used one.

I did my induction/training there mid March 07.... so nearly a year! You?

I remember before I remembered 5222, I used to type LEB into the search function... and staff would laugh at me.... but beats typing in CU and having a billion pictures pop up

i never thought i would be using the codes, but when everyday something is on special and people buy bag loads of them , i then end up memorising the codes.

I did stocktake for the first time last week. Worked from 2:30 pm until 1 am. Man my eyes were killing me, on the good side, manager shouted us workers PIZZA, lol.

Pants: I got mine from target and crossroads. But most stores sell black pants. Big W, Kmart, Supre, jeans west, etc, these are just a few stores that i can think of off the top of my head.

Shoes: This is where comfort becomes important. I always wore my uber-comfy Roc school shoes (bought from Betts or Williams), until they fell apart (literally). When they fell apart, I had to buy new shoes. I still wear my school shoes to work, but they're not Rocs and they're nowhere near as comfy. So my advice is to put comfort ahead of fashion, and if you need to spend a bit on your shoes. Your feet will thank you for it.
