Definitely ! This is just playing around though xD.

Of course I know that I don't have 16K or 50k to play around with.

Trust me, nothing works. That's how the market is. Technical Analysis is bullshit. Seriously, just study the cycle and trend of a company. Go view OHLC Charts at the period of 1 hour and study the changes. If there was a legitimate strategy, we would all be winners, but sadly, you win some, you learn some.

I invest in CS:GO Skins. Does this count? Jkjks. But I too wish to look into the idea of investing and the such. I've heard that it can be rather fun at times?

It's still investing, CS:GO is a market! Honestly, what made me interested in the stock market was actually TF2, I've learned a lot about how the TF2 economy worked, supply and demand at a young age and how easy people were making a profit.

Things like tf2 and cs go economies can teach you a lot and are not bad starting points.

Found out a teacher invested in companies, 30 of them indeed, and he wonders why he doesn't make a profit when he is 'diversifying' his portfolio with a low amount of start up capital.

Lol, those transaction costs are gonna wreck him, especially if he wants to re-balance his portfolio regularly.

Long term investment. No need to balance.

Even if he diversifies ... There will always be some risk that cannot be removed

    Variance^2 of a portfolio = Beta (P) X market variance ^2 + episome P ^2

Episome ... Aka the residual risk , is the bit that you diversify . You cannot get rid of the systematic exam .

    Nope.

The market still has risk (systematic ) and assets + portfolios react to it. Unsystematic risk which is firm specific can be diversified away.

You cannot have Zero risk unless it's a risk free asset like bank deposits or bonds. Banks are assumed to be safe as they wont go broke and if it's a country like Aus or Canada, the bonds are safe from default.

I was referring to going beyond the immediate market - portfolio theory always seems to assume the investors are constrained by some kind of boundary. As for the whole concept of risk-free... that's a whole other discussion.

I've read several times, in several places, that people who invest money like this tend lose money on average.

    Re: Does anyone invest here?

Lower risk does not mean a more positive return. Diversification lowers how wildly your returns can fluctuate. It has nothing to do with the actual return values. When you try to stabilise your returns by diversification you are not only reducing the chances of very bad downside outcomes but also very good upside outcomes.

You can have a portfolio of stocks that give stable but negative returns overall.

    Re: Does anyone invest here?

In all honesty I'm not that convinced diversification is the right answer for a lot of people particularly those with smaller capital amounts. If you are aiming to minimise the individual risks, then rather than trying to diversify yourself, maybe you're better off investing in products which are already inherently more diversified to reduce costs/effort like an index fund, or utilising your super? For me, I figured if I wanted to be diversified, I already have access to better tools for that (namely investment funds) and instead, I'd rather use my own capital for the 'big bets' which I want to make. Admittedly my investing strategy has changed so much between when I was 20-21 taking out large loans to now, but I think the difference between the return from removing market risk (i.e. the risk-free rate essentially with some credit risk on top by investing in a TD) and a 'low risk investment' means that I'm exposed to risk without a worthwhile reward. Therefore I may as well go for something a bit more out there.

One other thing for newbies to think about are the tax implications for the various investment approaches. Whilst tax shouldn't guide you in what you invest in, the reality is it's your post-tax returns which matter, and some investment options allow for more favourable tax treatments.
