In my line of work, we'd call that operational risk.

Is it me or did everyone anticipate this to happen, even though their profits were expanding in the recent years?

$1.5k in Dota Ti6 shit, - first test run, see how it goes, should be breakeven at a minimum, but definitely expecting 10-15% return after all costs considered.

Yes, over a certain amount, you would need to report it.

    Re: Does anyone invest here?

    @seremify.

Is it better to go down the path of passive strategies which use:
     Buy and hold
 Index fund or index tracking

OR is it better to go down the way of active investment (aka day trading).
    >> it also comes under the assumption that the market is not efficient and can be beaten

    .........

Empirically, finance journals say that active investment is good in the short term but is not so good in the long term due to fees etc.

I'd say the answer depends on your risk profile, your time that you can commit to watching it for day trading, and of course how much capital you have vs. costs of transactions.

I personally did the latter of active investment when I had the time and could close out positions to beat the T+3 settlement, but if you don't know what you're doing and just want long term gains... then probably index fund is safest way to set it and leave it. I took risk into my profile by either going with structured products from my banks, as well as buying direct into certain equities. Unfortunately I wish I had realised some of these earlier but due to my job, I had to hold onto some mining and property shares way beyond when I should have realised and now have a bit of a loser on my hands. On the plus side though, I can always save it to realise later when I need to offset CGT in the future.

Why do I need to include quickselling, I don't understand?

Yes there's fees(obiviously), but that's totally different to taxes which are totally avoidable.

There are taxes too, if you sell over a certain amount.

Because unless you're buying the staple items, it's really difficult to sell your items at the designated price that you wish to sell it for. So for a short-term period, you may need withdraw out, so you would QS your items. DOTA 2 is not the best investment, but it's viable.

What I know about Tax/CGT is that if you hold the stock/share for more than 12 months only 30% will be deducted meanwhile if you sold the stock less than that 50% will be taken out.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Different connotations. In game virtual items are not based on real life incentives. However, there is value given to it due to S & D.

Yes, over $20000 will get reported in the US.........not very relevant to me

I dont think you realise what a quicksell is , quicksell is just selling your item at around 80% of steam market price to sellers if you need cash/pure that very moment, and that's only for non-liquid items like knifes - why would i need to QS when I'm investing in certain items???

you don't even know what I'm buying and selling, so please don't comment

    Of course I don't know

Because I was never referring to you in the first place, but I was quoting someone else, if you ever read back

And investing in items is never a good idea. Unless it's a staple like keys. Crates could work.

I would not bet against it. You're not gonna get great returns since post GFC everyone tightened lending rules in addition sydney doesn't take a huge crash. If you want to short housing, best do it with suburbs with little population growth yet high increasing supply.

I've only been responding to you quoting me, it looks to me like you were referring to me above all else.

Lmao, you don't know about the steam market at all, I've been playing and trading in it for 4 years now, there's many many items which have been great investments. Keys are not investments because they will always stay the same value range due to unlimited buys from the official store, so why would you invest in keys? (bar very few which can't be redeemed anyways)

    Re: Does anyone invest here?

Out of interest how much money do you need to put in to invest in these virtual items?

(I also wonder what's the risk of the 'market' invalidating your rights to the items and totally screwing you over; or just getting hacked)
