I have to help my struggling cousin in english. I want to know how I should help a kid in year 9 (just started).


I was thinking about making him read a book every week and write a summary essay. Also, make him learn new words every week and construct sentences using those words.

His grades currently are pretty poor (C- range).

Tips please.

Yeah since he has plenty of time before any serious English work - maybe just explore the ideas in the text with him verbally. Writing essays might put him off and give him a hate towards them. But who doesn't hate essays?
