because he got more students, he could charge more?

I only charge 25-30 depending on who I am tutoring
Do you need tutoring in Eco, business and Maths? If Yes, PM. North Shore Only

    Re: Coaching rates?

It's an odd debate, and I really dont think theres any clear answer. I have worked for a private tutoring college for 6 years now as a casual tutor and it still marvels me at the prices the college charges, and the variance in quality and experience of teachers. The college charges a standard rate of around $60 per hour for private tutoring (although most students are preferred to have a shared lesson (2 students) at 2/3 of the price each).

I believe the teachers are all of a high standard, however, their experience can range from 2nd year uni students with high HSC marks, to ex school teachers, all at the same rate.

In this case you are paying for reputation, professionalism, and for a receipt!

Personally, I like to keep tutoring affordable. My main aim is to build the confidence of students, as well as their skills and problem solving abilities. For me, I charge $40/hr but I do have my own facilities if they prefer to go somewhere outside of their own home. I've also had almost 6 years experience in HSC tutoring and could easily call on many of my ex students for glowing references. The pricing is not to make alot of money, but to justify the time spent.

Also, just cos someone got awesome results in their own HSC, doesnt mean theyre any good at explaining the techniques to someone else...

Check out tuteu.com.au. Some private tutors charge less than 20. Most of them are beginners but that doesn't mean they don't know the subject

    Cheers

    Re: Coaching rates?

I reckon ~$25ph for groups and ~$30ph for private is reasonable
I go for group and its something like $25ph, which is good except for the fact that each lesson is 3 hrs long :mad1:

    Re: Coaching rates?

hmmm North Shore tutoring charges like $44 per hour for 3U Maths and its not even worth it. I'd say $30 for a good tutor is reasonable. Under $20 if the tutor is bad.

    Re: Coaching rates?

I'd say it depends on the service.

I know one Mathematics tutor who charges from $40pp ph for group sessions til SC, $60+ for HSC individuals, works in her own home and is well worth the money. If I had found a similar English tutor, I would have been delighted to pay that much also.

But a student would rarely be able to provide a service meriting such reward. For them I'd guess a range of $10-40/h for individuals (including tutoring by those still in school for lower year/ability students and those few exceptional students capable of offering a tutoring service to rival any teacher's). This may include babysitting/tutoring combos or other enhanced products. It would also depend on the pupil, difficult or unwilling pupils may be an issue if you tutor younger students.

    Depends.

But why do you need a tutor? Are you struggling that much?

    Re: Coaching rates?

Reminds me of what our Physics teacher told us about one of his Grammar coaching students.

Teacher: "Why do you want to get coaching?"
Student: "Umm, I'm coming 2nd, I want to come 1st"

    .... like WTF :S

    that would be me

WARNING: Don't go to tutoring for a place that charges you beyond $40 an hour. It's a rip off!!!!!!!! YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF SELF STUDYING.

I paid $60 an hour to go to this private tutor, who I assumed must be good considering the expensive coaching rate, but this tutor is SO BAD!!!!! She doesn't have experience + I know more than her, considering the fact that she's a university student.

Well I think my teacher that charges $120 per 1.5 hours is quite good for 1 on 1 tutoring.

Let me know if you want his details for tutoring for 2U, 3U or 4U maths.

    Re: Coaching rates?

What would be a reasonable price for high school leavers who got:
    1. High ATAR (99+ for example)
    2. High 90s in the subjects that he/she wishes to pursue in tutoring
    3. 1.5 years of informal tutoring experience?
    $25-30 perhaps?
