I strongly second this sentiment. Inspite of having to cope with law at usyd, Dave somehow manages to find time not just to tutor students but also offer free help to many people on this forum. He is one of the most altruistic and intelligent people I have had the pleasure of knowing. I would most certainly recommend him as a tutor.

    Hi all

I am currently taking on a couple of students for next term. Probably have 2-3 spaces. Also happy to take questions. As always shoot me an email at dblo7401@uni.sydney.edu.au, or give me a call or text after hours on 0405836941.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Re: English Tutoring - Why you need me

    Hi all,

Just a quick one - I have had a couple of students ask me whether I am willing to do limited sessions just to correct/mark/give feedback leading up to trials. The answer is YES. I am happy to do this short term stuff. My rate is same as my tutoring rate - $50 per hour. My only caveat is that you get in touch with me and we schedule in appropriate goals, as I can only do short turn around with notice; I am very busy.

Kind regards and best of luck to everyone! You are coming up to the home stretch now...

    D

    Hello again -

Given the stresses of upcoming trials, I'd like to open the floor for a short time to any last minute questions or anxieties any of you might have. Feel free to post here - or you can pm or email me - and I will do my best to give you practical advice as quickly as possible.

    Cheers,
    Dave

(Free) English Adv, Ext Trials and Ext 2 Submission Advice

    Hi all,

As questions and concerns flood in from my students around this time of year, I am reminded of the extreme stress and heightened anxiety that Trials can cause. For that reason, for the next 3 weeks, I'd like to open the floor here and privately to you to ask any burning questions you might have and see if I can ease the path a little for you. Nothing is a basic/stupid/obvious or irrelevant question.

My email is dblo7401@uni.sydney.edu.au. If you are looking for something more substantial in the way of tutoring/marking, or just to find out a bit more about me and see some written Q and A, you can find it here:
English Tutoring - Why you need me

    Thanks and all the best,
    Dave

Hi, I was wondering if you recommend doing a creative writing piece for EXT 2 English.

    Thanks!

    Hi si2136,

It's a little broad a question to answer definitively. If you are capable and passionate you can certainly do extremely well in a creative writing piece for Ext 2. However, you need to remember this is fundamentally an English exercise. Therefore, even a very good piece can do poorly if not justified on academic grounds, supported by a strong academic and literary Reflection Statement which clearly evidences deep and broad research, literary intent and insight.

Please let me know if you need further clarification

I'm not what sure you're meant to do for Extension 2 English, besides doing a major work and a reflection statement. Is there any question at all or is it free of choice? And could you describe what you mean by justification on academic grounds?

Re: English Tutoring - Why you need me

Yes that is indeed what you do for Extension 2. You chose a topic/set of themes/ (or whatever other more creative parameters you want) and make a project on it.

Regarding the 'academic justification', it's important to look at themes, ideas, explorations that have some intellectual (and by extension academic) basis. Although it's fine to be obscure e.g. look at 17th century Japanese Origami or whatever, it's generally good to ground it in perennial 'English' themes like human nature, the human condition, emotions, relationships e.t.c. Otherwise it's not an English MW as such. The boundaries are fairly fluid between 'English' and other subjects such as history, but it needs to be clearly something in academic intellectual territory to give it depth and merit.
