Crime rate in Melbourne

I'm planning to move down to Melbourne (from Syd) for about 1 year for a graduate job. Perferably living close to Southern Cross Station.

I've been down there a couple of times, but I've heard the CBD has a high crime rate esp. at night, with the alcohol and violence. Can anyone confirm this? Or recommend a safer suburb close to the CBD/transport/and food?

Re: Crime rate in Melbourne

ive never lived in either place but i totally agree with what you said riet... bloody idiot. Just live out of the city a bit, far cheaper and closer to cheaper food shopping.
