Can I get in?

Hello everyone,

Over the past few months, I have been looking at getting an Apprenticeship, but with no luck, I have really had another think through and wish to follow my old ambition to become a PDHPE teacher.

But as most of you would have realised, is that once a person makes a decision like this, early it more then likely affects their school effort as an apprenticeship barely requires anything.
The same can be said for me, I need a ATAR of 63.95 to get into UWS at Penrith to study the bachelor of Health Science which would lead onto a 4th year of gaining a master of teaching (Secondary), but Iam worried about my marks, which I have let slip during my trials I scored the following;

English ADV : 70%
Maths GEN: 65%
Ancient History: 65%
IT: 85%
Software: 50%

English I beleive I can do no better in, Maths a 70% is possible, and ancient history I think if I re thought I could get a 80% which has been my average for all my other tasks, IT I could push up to a 95% and software well its certinally not my 'forte', Iam absolutely shocking at it, what are my chances?.
And on a side note, if I were to not score enough, I understand the only way to get into PDHPE teaching would be through a overly expensive college at homebush, which Iam not willing and cant fork out 16,000au a year for, so what would be a way to for eg enter primary school teaching with a ATAR not high enough?

Re: Can I get in?

Should be able to, the tricky slope there is the software mark, which will plummet your atar if it's repeated in hsc. In my opinion anyway.

Re: Can I get in?

Ok, Im just wondering how I would do this, when I apply for my position with UAC at UWS, I pay 23 dollars I understand, but lets say I dont get the required 63.95, how would I apply for other things?, do I do it at the same time as backup? do I pay for every course over again (23$), and if I were not to get in, what would be a good course I could use to progress into PDHPE?

Re: Can I get in?

When you're applying through UAC, you can enter up to 9 preferences as your courses. So you would have your first preference, being the course at UWS, and then up to 8 back ups if you don't make it, and you can change them with no charge.
If you're willing to go to a uni out of Sydney, the University of Newcastle offers a course in teaching PE. Not sure what the UAI/ATAR is though.

Re: Can I get in?

Ok, but as I understand this, is that I can do a different subject and gain entry into my course with a semesters worth of good marks, but does this course have to relate to anything particular, the economy courses seem to need a ATAR in the 50's....
I also want to know, If i did absolutely horribly in software and got a mystery mark , whats my route then?

just a suggestion to you, my university is excellent for primary teaching and it includes a lot of PE/H/PD it is not secondary teaching but it is enough to give you experience in the field. I studied PE/H/PD in semester 1 I had to plan a physical lesson and teach the entire class. and there is another unit of PE in 3rd Year.

Re: Can I get in?

Just found out that UWS is offering a diploma in health science next year which would allow me to move onto Year 2 of Health science the year after, Im just wondering how do I go about entering one of these 'diploma' courses, is there a ATAR requirment?

Bachelor of Education, Primary at Strathfield ATAR is 83.35
course code is: 101101

and

Bachelor of Education Early Childhood and Primary at Strathfield ATAR is 80.20
course code is: 101114
I checked the UAC book or you can search UAC online
I am sure there is also B Exercise and Health Science or B Exercise and Sports Science.

also there is open day on Saturday 12th September 10am-3pm Strathfield campus maybe pop over there, chat to them , ask them questions tell them what you want to do and they will give you options and go to their seminars , they usually provide these to give you a taste what the course all about.

Re: Can I get in?

As I mentioned in a different thread - you can do Curtin University's Bach of Ed (Primary) with pretty much no entry requirements by distance via Open Uni's (www.open.edu.au). It's accredited in other states and you can do pracs locally. Try and aim for secondary teaching though, there's an oversupply of primary teachers (unless you want to go rural, work casually (kiss home loan request goodbye) or specialise in things like Special Ed). I think USQ's Bach of Ed by distance has secondary PDHPE available, but could be wrong.

Re: Can I get in?

OK, not to be a doomsdayer but, assume you get a ATAR of 50... there's not much you can get into with that. So, there's a test you can do called STAT which is a test of general intelligence and NOT effort over a sustained period like the HSC... If you do alright in that (you don't need to do amazingly) then you can use that score as an alternative pathway into uni... It may not get you into a B health Sci but it will get you into a BA or BSc and from there you can work hard and transfer as has been mentioned...
It's a bit expensive ($100 mark) but it's money well spent if it helps get you into your dream career if you ask me...
