engineers are not ppl on the street .... engineers usually take up management level positions, they tell the ppl on the street what to do ... a civil engineer wil be responsible for making sure that the buildings are built smoothly with no hassles ... they dont go and build the buildings. they dont eactly design buildings ... but they are involved with the designing and approval of the dsign process.
it is because engineering requires knowledge on a huge variety of tasks that they do more subjects at uni ... and a huge variety of subjects too ...

right, i refer to civil engineer again...the UAI is like 75..

so there must be so many civil engineers out there..

will i get a *decent paying* job as a civil engineer by the time i graduate, if i actually do this course next year??

hard question, ikno.

A civil degree would prepare you for a wide variety of careers, given its general nature. It would be a good choice.

not true for software engineering though ... in seng, u do just 4 maths courses throughout ur 4 yr degree ... which isnt much ..
1. maths 1a
2. discrete maths (EEK!)
3. finite maths (EEK!)^2
4. any 2nd yr stats subject

actually, i think its 2859 for those doing single degrees.
when i was with ken (for quite some time) discussing my actuarial degree, he suggested i do 2901 .. so yea ...

if you dont know what a civil engineer does by now, i don't recommend it

it doesn't matter if you do 4 unit maths, it seems it wont fit into your interest category

to succeed, you must know what you are really interested in

most engineering courses are boring and tedious, which is why courses such like civil engineer have very high drop out rates

and another thought, dont just look at UAI's, you will regret that you got into any course just because you have a low UAI and this is all you can get into

well civil may have a low UAI but its one of the most rigorous courses out there. Most ppl drop out at the end of first yr due to the heavy physics and mathematical content.

ok...so i'm confused...

the UAI for civil engineer is low bcause?

they need more ppl in it?
or they don need more ppl?

cos i thought low UAI courses mean the demand for this work is low...
and if its high, the demand is high...

civil has a lower uai partly because they take in more ppl into the course ... i'd say the no.of of ppl doing civil wud be 3 times the number of ppl doing software or bioinformatics (which have the two highest uai cut offs at unsw for engineering)
