unsw has the best engineering faculty in australasia ... its true, i'm not saying it just cos i go there ....

Yeh, unsw is pretty good... Im most probably going to do an engineering course there myself

well depends really on what stream of engo u wanna do
for your aeronautical/aerospace then i would say that usyd is better cos it has links with northern hemisphere unis and corporations, whereas unsw does not....otherwise i agree with the general sentiments that UNSW is better

so that wud mean unsw's eng faculty is bigger / has more students and staff/ gets more funding / gets more priority etc right?
but thats kinda hard to accept cos unsw eng courses' cutoffs are kinda low generally. the highest ones r only low 90s like comp eng and seng, so judging from uai cutoffs, it doesnt seem very popular...

the cut offs depend on not only how much demand the course has got, but also how many places are avialable to do that course.
as i said in another thread, a course like civil engg which has a uai of around 80 easily takes three times the no.of students that get into software engg, hence the low uai.
this doesnt mean that software is less in demand either. the govt decides how many seats are to be allocated for every degree in every uni.

so are there any good eng degree where u specialise in designing machines? e.g. mechanical engineering? pardon my ignorance, im pretty sure theres that particular degree at unsw, but im just wonderin if there are any other variant(s) also available.
and can someone explain wat majors / minors are? like, is that wot u specialise in or somefin? do ppl who major in two diff things get diff degrees in the end?

u cant do a major-minor thingo for engg ... thats only for sci, comm n arts ... in engg, u can do just one specialisaion. and yes mech engg would be ur best bet for designing machines

would a double engineering degree be to demanding... eg. bachelor civil engineering/mining engineering? reason i wanna chose this is coz civil engineering is interesting, and mining engineers earn 80 grand a year when they graduate (according to statistics) but i am not sure i would be able to cope with the workload and i still wanna hav a chance to go out and hav a good time (hav a life other than studying) while doing a degree

there are certain double engg possible ... most are with biomed engg ... but i think there's something like civil engg + environmental engg .... check the uac guide

hmmm.. but if i were to do a double degree on engineering wudnt that just mean id still get one BE in the end? or two identical pieces of paper, with different fineprint...

biomed is a masters, you can do it with another engineering degree + it's 5 or 6 years.
if you want to design machines look at doing mechatronics. it's all the l33t high-tech design stuff.
biomed looks more at creating substitute human parts, helping add functionality to the lives of disabled people, yada yada.
oh and you can have any number of letters after or before your name.. it just makes it harder to sign things
