Unis like USYD and UNSW offer flexible first year. I would like to know what it's all about. The special line you pick at the end of the year, will your results from 1st year influence what line you can pick or not? Are there any disadvantages of doing it?

And also, Flexible Entry.
Something like geo engineering requires 99+, if you end up getting 94, would they accept you straight in or do you have to do some sort of test before that? Any disadvantages of choosing this option as well?

Thanks for you help in advance =]

Flexible first year @Usyd

1: You can move to any stream for which you had the original ATAR. eg if you get an ATAR 99.9 you could pick any engineering stream (since all stream < 99.9), but if you got 95 you could only move into streams whose ATARs were <95

BUT

2: Depending on the average mark you get in first year, you can get into a stream if your average is good enough. See Clause 2 of http://sydney.edu.au/handbooks/engineering/rules/faculty_resolutions.shtml.
