Important advice for all those considering studying engineering next yr

You can hide this advertisement by registering.
hey all.
i'm a hsc 08 student studying engineering first yr at unsw.

just felt like stressing some warnings for those wanting or thinking of studying some sort of engineering degree at any uni next year.

PLEASE DONT BE FOOLED BY ANY UNI STUDENTS/STAFF ABOUT THEM SAYING STUFF LIKE "ENGINEERING, IT'S A HEAPS FUN/REWARDING/CHALLENGING DEGREE, YOU'LL HAVE THE BEST TIME HERE ON CAMPUS!!"

I FELL INTO THAT SORT OF TRAP LAST YR WHEN I WAS PUTTING IN MY PREFERENCES, COS I HAD ALL THESE UNSW STUDENTS ENCOURAGING ME TO STUDY ENGINEERING, AND EXAGGERATING HOW THEY GET TO DO 'FUN' STUFF SUCH AS BUILDING COOL NEW ROBOTS, SOLAR CARS, ELECTRICAL DEVICES, ETC ETC.

AND DAMN DID I MAKE SUCH A HUGE MISTAKE.
SINCE I STARTED THE 2ND SEM, I'VE NEVER MADE SUCH A GREAT REGRET TAKING THIS OFFER TO STUDY THIS SHIT DEGREE. FML

i must warn all of you, that if u are seriously gonna be studying or even considering engineering as a future degree/career.
DO NOT STUDY IT UNLESS U ARE ABSOLUTELY 100%, AND I MEAN 100%, SURE AND POSITIVE THAT THIS IS WHAT U WANNA STUDY.

my advice is, to not just look at them brochures/info leaflets they gave u at open days (cos theyre not in-depth enough).
have a thorough browse at their handbooks, it should show the program structure and details of course outlines for those types of eng degrees u are considering studying.

i'm getting this feeling that so many unis are trying to suck students in to study eng and just really pisses me off to see when students realise theyve been ripped and in actual fact, u dont really get that much hands-on projects, rather just a shitload of report writing, thesis essays, and pointless work that really gets u fucked over and over every night.

so plz dont choose eng just cos u think it'll be 'cool' and ending up in the same situation as me.
and sure, they always uni is fun, vibrant, lively and u have a great time on campus whilst u study,
BUT BELIEVE ME, UNI IS NOT FUN COS EVEN THO U HAVE MORE FREEDOM/INDEPENDENCE AND JOINING THESE STUDENT CLUBS/ACTIVITIES, THERES STILL THE WORK THAT ANNOYS THE SHIT OUT OF U, AND I BET MOST PPL DONT EVEN HAVE THE TIME TO JOIN SUCH CLUBS NO MATTER HOW FUN THEY APPEAR TO BE.

on a side note, dont think finishing and acing the hsc is gonna be the end of all your problems and solve your future, cos uni is just as horrible and fkn stressful as much as hsc, depending on your attitude.
but still, u may find uni fun and interesting, if your that sort of person so u should be lucky and something to at least look forward to.

again, dont be lured by the staff/students and whatever they say, whatever they show, whatever they offer, its all a load of misleading info and lies.
but by all means, if u know what you're applying for, and are certain this is what u wanna do, then by all means, go ahead so long as you're aware of the sort of work they do.

all the best in your studies, good luck in the hsc and life beyond!!

Wow. motivating much?! lol

I think most people are intelligent enough to research the course content of what they want to do before they go to uni - they're not sucking you in, they're trying to help you by giving you information and encouraging you to do your own research into the subject.

There's no need to turn people off engineering or uni in general by having a whinge about how tough you're finding it right now. Talk to someone. Take a break. Go on a bloody holiday or something!

Is it because there isn't enough girls at engineering faculty at UNSW?

Dude, just cuz you made a shithouse decision about your future doesn't mean you should go around scaring people, i have friends that take engineering at UNSW and they love it, yeah its a lot of work but they love it. It's pretty clear you don't and thats probably why you hate uni so much.

i'm just trying to warn those who are making unrealistic and blind decisions on studying it next yr.
but if your friends are liking it, then i'm happy for them.

Sorry, but most of us on here don't need warnings. We actually know what our courses offer, and we aren't fooled by the advertised gimmicks fed to us by a plethora of faculties.

You were fooled. You payed the price. FYL.

i've applied for science/commerce next yr at same uni. if not, maybe just a science degree or might even combine with arts. not too sure yet.
hopefully it should be less boring, and i should settle in the environment sooner or later.
