Do the lecturers care? Is it impolite?

It has become commonplace for me to see laptops out every lesson - students typing speeds being faster than writing. Heck, I can even text faster than I can write with a pen.

So, is it normal for laptops to be brought to lectures?

The general rule of ALL lecture room is shut the fuck up, no-one wants to hear you talk.

Otherwise, pretty much do whatever the fuck you want.

It's definitely not 'common' in my lectures, but there are a few people who swing that way.

lecturers don't care what you do in lectures as long as you don't talk. If you're going to distract other people, don't bother going (they're not compulsory).

As for laptops- i think it depends on the university and/or the course you are doing as to whether they are common. USYD Law, i would say anywhere between 50-75% use laptops in lectures now- people tend to type faster than they write, and in law most people just want to get as much down that the lecturer says as possible, then try to understand it later.
Arts subjects, a lot less people use laptops, although it is slowly rising. Last year I saw about four or so maybe using laptops (in a lecture of 60-150 people).
Science I would assume even less because it would be a lot more difficult to type up equations/diagrams (although I don't do science, so this is more a guess).
Battery life tends to be the killer for using laptops- there aren't generally many power points in lecture theatres (in the new law building at usyd they hardly included any in lecture theatres which is silly- although apparently deliberate because they think cords going everywhere is a safety issue or something stupid like that).

I use my laptop in my law classes, and handwrite in arts. The thing to remember is that you still have to handwrite exams- so keep up your writing skills!

It's not generally considered impolite as long as you're not being distracting.

Personally I use my laptop in all lectures except for maths (because typing maths notation is a lot more difficult than handwriting it). I'd say in my arts courses the number of people using laptops is still a minority but it's not uncommon.

I just acquired a laptop recently, so next semester would put the effectiveness of the laptop to the test. I noticed in some of our lectures, some students would position themselves right at the front or next to a speaker and record the lecture on Audacity.

Definitely common for us and most use them productively ie. taking notes from the lecture.

Lol...

At SAE we were all supplied the 2009 MacBook Pro 15" for $500 (special deal the school has with Apple), so the entire room had an MBP in front of them.

Some of the rooms had wireless jammers, some didn't. Honestly, we didn't get that distracted and if we did, we just went to the guy at the front of the room that recorded each lesson with a piezo mic in his bag hehe.

One of my Maths lecturers gets pretty pissed off with laptops since it's pretty hard to do Maths on a laptop.

Math1131 UNSW algebra?

Cause if we're refering to the same guy, I would just like to point out how much I hate him. In one of the lectures some guy was reading a newspaper which was odd I must say, but then the lecturer goes "Can you put the newspaper away please". So the guy puts it away and lecturer says: "Got a problem?"
"No"
"Good"
Like a total autocratic fag and continues with the lecture...

But anyway, OP, it's not uncommon in general for students to bring laps and netty's to lectures. I bring mine all the time but realise it's pretty unneccesary for some subjects and just becomes a distraction

its more common that it should be. you dont need a laptop, all you need is a pen and paper. and for those that say you cant write fast enough with a pen, the reason is your writing too much.

using a laptop to takes notes is like using a sledge hammer to crack an egg. yea it works, but the side of a bowl is just as good. plus, if you decide to use a sledge hammer, you might be tempted to see what other cool things your sledge hammer can do, for example, your sledge hammer might be able to surf the net and play games and oh, look at that, the lecture is over, time to go home
