I don't know what the actual drop out rate is...but apparently my course (speech path) has the highest drop out rate of any course at Sydney UNI...I hope I am not one of them!

lack of interest is definately a big factor, especially coz in some courses you have to start with the basics, like in science courses, which are so boring and sometimes seem so irrelevant. I know in my course (b of Animal science) we dont actually get to do any animal related subjects (except biology, but that hardly counts) until 3rd year, so yrs 1 and 2 are boring (and hard too)

But if you disliked UNI so much then you probably wouldn't end up with a job in that field either...so continuing on to get a degree you won't use would also be a waste of money.

Do they include people who transfer into a different course as "dropping out"?

depends on drop-out reason as to whether it's a waste of money or not.

e.g. if you keep failing an essential subject, you're going to be stuck at uni for a LONG time. and with the proposed reforms, if you stay around too long, you have to pay full fee instead of hecs.

ummmm...... i think when a hsc student chooses uni/course base on UAI cut-off but not his own interest will be one of the factor.

Definitely, and that's the case with a lot of people in my course (elec eng). Because of its fairly low UAI cut-off in the 80s, most people think it will be an easy bludge and choose to do it. But it's difficulty level is comparable to some of those courses requiring a UAI of 90+, so they drop out because they find it hard. According to my lecturer, the drop out rate is usually more than half (last year it was ~60%).

And people who had lots of choices but no particular interest in any course :).

I agree with wogboy, EE's UAI gives no idea of the true difficulty of the course :)
