-the intoduction of gm foods has allowed for the indtrodution of multiple vitamins to new products eg, super tomato contains over 12 additional vitmins and minerals.
-has allowed for a greater analysis of individual nutritional needs more accurately
-has caused negative effects in regards to shopping online = more convenience foods pruchased online eg dominos online
    - allowed for the introduction of new products eg, eg customised food products to be made online.

Re: Food Technology Marathon (question and answer)

Sous Vide= when a perishably food is cooked in a vaccuum bag which has has all air is removed providing an anoxic environment these bags are made of a thermosetting-plastic such as polypropylene or polyethylene, and are heat stable. The food product is then blast chilled to retain cell structure and to keep in nutrients and other vitamins and minerals. Food products which are packaged in this way have an extended shelf life of up to 6 weeks

Active Packaging = refers to the use of a material that will provide a barrier that will interact with the ambient surroundings to maintiain a stable environment for the food product that will ensure the longevity of its life.

M.A.P. = works from the principal that the starting atmosphere is mixed with other gases to to ensure an extended shelf life of a product. There are two methods for this process; headspace-gasing map and film-additive map.

Identify 3 legislations relating to packaging and labelling in the food industry.

    Let's see...

    - Canning
    - Cooking and blanching
    - Curing
    - Drying
    - Freezing
    - Pasteurisation
    - Sterilisation

Sources: Common sense, I also used a website to find the ones I couldn't think of. The link is below.

Next question: How does modified atmosphere packaging preserve food?

Re: Food Technology Marathon (question and answer)

Storage takes place when raw produce is stored before being manufactured into value-added foods. Manufacture takes place after the raw produce has being thawed or removed from storage. Often food manufacturing plants are located near sources of raw materials or transport networks.

Next question: Identify ONE native Australian plant, state where it is found, describe its flavour and identify ONE usage of the plant, identify at least one retail product that can produced using this plant and state the cost of this retail product/s.

The question tests the following outcome:
H1.2: A student examines the nature and extent of the Australian food industry.

As for my previous question, I assumed that it was in the syllabus as it was taken from a Board of Studies Online Multiple Choice Quiz!

Re: Food Technology Marathon (question and answer)

ok got ya, well that last question that you put up "dentify ONE native Australian plant, state where it is found, describe its flavour and identify ONE usage of the plant, identify at least one retail product that can produced using this plant and state the cost of this retail product/s." cannot be asked for us as for it does not relate to our syllabus, this was in the old food technology 2u subject, this qustion can still be done easily if we go

identify one austrailan organisation and identify how it maintains quality control.

Sanitarium, maintains quality control by the use of metal detectors, weights, sieves, screens, ISO9000, HACCP and OH&S.

How does modified atmosphere packaging preserve food? it is in the syllabus sorry schoey i just didnt see it: MAF occurs when either the starting atmosphere surrounding food is controlled and the packaging is inert of the packaging material itself controls the movement of gases from inside and outside of the package.

Next q: The 4 important driving forces behind developments in any particular sector of the food industry are?

Re: Food Technology Marathon (question and answer)

1st and 3rd ones were right but other two were
    - the need for companies to grow and prosper
    -consumer expectations

the advantages are that the package is:
    -easily opened
    - lightweight
    -low in cost
    -transparent
    -easily stored
    -used when reheating the food

the control of food labelling focuses on what three categories

Re: Food Technology Marathon (question and answer)

primary packaging is the pack in which the food is sold to the consumer
secondary packaging is the shrink wrap, carton or bag holding several similar primary packaged items together, it also refers to the bulk cartons used by retailers tat hold many single items.
For example a package of apple juice may have 6 25mm cartons shrink wrapped together.

Re: Food Technology Marathon (question and answer)

Q: Name 6 types of plastic and their uses.

A: 1. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET): often used for soft drink bottles and food packaging.
    2. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE): normally used to make containers for household chemicals, such as bleach, shampoo and washing up liquid.
    3. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): Used for packaging sheet, wire and cable insulation, windows, film and credit cards.
    4. Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE): Highly flexible yet strong, this plastic is often used for film, e.g. carrier bags, refuse bags and heat sealed non-rigid containers.
    5. Polypropylene (PP): used for ice cream tubs, margarine tubs and yoghurt pots.
    6. Polystyrene (PS): normally used for (plastic) cutlery, vending cups, foam egg cartons, food packaging trays, CD cases and protective packaging.

I found a really good website to help answer this question.

Policy is overall philosophy of the Gov’t on an issue. Legislation is laws passed by Gov’t on all levels eg. Food Act 2003. The difference being a policy is an ideal that is to try and be achieved while a piece of legislation is one that must be followed.
