19 Nov 2009, 11:18 AM ![]() | Studying law at Newcastle You can hide this advertisement by registering. Hello,I am currently doing my hsc in 2009 and interested in studying law afterwards. My problem is that i have heard a lot that a law degree from Newcastle is not very well accredited by law firms etc then say one from Sydney. I was looking at combining commerce and law as my interest really lies in corporate law and my question is would it be better to studying a B.Com/LLB at newcastle or study for a B.COM at newcastle and then do a postgraduate study for a LLB at Sydney afterwards. The reason that i would not go to Sydney straightaway is: 1. I am not expecting that high a UAI (99.75) 2. I am local to newcastle thus making it much much easier to live and local points etc. I am considering but i cannot at all decide this yet as only discovering through studying and self experiance i will know, studying for a LLM (Master of law) at Sydney. If i were to do that then how hard would it be to get accepted having a B.Com/LLB from Newcastle? And would this solve the problem of Newcastle law not being as accredited as potential employers would be more swayed to consider me due to the LLM from Sydney? Thanks for reading and any feedback. |

Common sense perhaps, but you don't want to plodd through your degree thinking it's nothing special only to fuck up your chances later.

1) Why is it that the people who always call it an 'inferior university' are from sydney? 2) Newcastle pumps out a proportional amount of graduates into top firms when you consider that it turns over 50 grads a year, of those a lot (like me) actually want to stay in newcastle. 3) If there is a prestige system why would the rich snobs care about university? sydney uni is dominated by scummy migrants (put on our snob hats here) old roses went to Knox, that they went to USyd is a non issue. If I were you I'd just go to newcastle. Its cheaper, more time efficient and you'll be doing something you enjoy. Btw don't get caught up on corporate law - 16 hour days writing contracts for the purchase of U levers for mine conveyor belts isn't what most people find rewarding. Edit: Let me know if you have any other questions, and if you're free one friday you can do a 'tour of law' and follow my friends and I to a few lectures and then to the bar.

Today, 1:21 PM ![]() | Re: Studying law at Newcastle also i know this is off the topic. But does newcastle look at your u.a.i and your tertiary marks when accepting transfers. im so confused on this transferring shit because its really unmotivating when people keep telling me that they look at your u.a.i when people on the phone have told me its whats better the tertiary marks or u.a.i. |

20 Sep 2009, 10:21 PM ![]() | Re: Studying law at Newcastle Are you wanting to transfer into law? It would depend on the degree you're currently doing now, I guess. I think once you get into uni, they only look at uni results but I could be wrong. I have a friend who always wanted to get into law but hasn't been able to transfer yet and they were getting credits/distinctions/high distinctions in Commerce. Getting high marks in law (for some reason) seems to be considerably harder. If worse comes to worse, you can always enter the graduate program. |

Newcastle is only looked upon badly by other law students...employers themselves love Newcastle people as they are perceived to be more hardworking and down to earth. So if you're prepared to deal with the stuck-up Sydney people, you'll probably do much better studying there. Also, Newcastle has College of Law combined with the final two years of study which employers love. I go to UNSW and don't like it as much as newcastle (that's where I started). Heaps of my friends from there just landed jobs in big firms so I would say the disadvantage is minimal. So long as you work hard and get good marks, you'll be fine. | |

18 Nov 2009, 8:25 PM ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Studying law at Newcastle real men do philosophy and gendered language majors and only philosophy and gendered language majors. So if you dont 'read' law and you're not doing arts, what exactly is it you're doing?
