Sid, here's a reply I have cut and pasted from another thread regarding college accommodation:

If you're 1st year and moving on campus because you have had to move for uni, then you should be fine getting a place at one of the colleges.

Barahineban:
A nice place to stay if you like either rooming with someone or living by yourself away from the 'hussle and bussle' of the other colleges. Id say its mostly couples, international students and 3rd/4th year students living here. Nice rooms and id say a higher quality overall compared to the others (its a newer complex). I was thinking about moving there this year, although it is pretty pricey if you have a room to yourself. Will need to cook/provide your own food.

International House:
Consists of approximately 50% Aussies and 50% Internationals from all countries from the US to Japan. Majority of 'blocks' have 3 floors, with 10 people on each floor, split into two sections by the kitchen and lounge areas. So you will get to know the 5 you are with really well, and the other 5 pretty well. There are courtyards and paths which seperate the blocks, and a few blocks with non-catered apartments for the older people and those who want to get away from noise. These guys like to party like Teds, but I think are a little more tamer (sp?) than Teds.

Edwards Hall (TEDS):
If you're a party animal and like interracting with people, then this is the place for you. A lot of people in this college, ive got a few friends here, and they like it. The main areas of Teds are Fully-Catered, although there are non-catered apartments also. Imo this is the most popular college for 1st years. My friends say the food is pretty ordinary, but ive seen it and its not too bad, they are just whingers.

Evatts House:
Consist of non-catered apartments, so you'll need to provide/cook your own food. Similar to International House it a lot of ways, although not as good (NB: Biased opinion). Not too sure what else to say about Evatt, it would suit those who are social, but not party animals like those at Teds. More space and trees between the 'blocks'.
Rating: 6/10

Well, I'm seriously considering Newcastle for radiation therapy and i'm err, i guess a little anxious about moving away from home
Anyway errr jst afew Qs:
1. As sad as this may sound, but how is internet access living on campus?(at any of the colleges, unsure, probbably considering international house first) I'll guess it's essentially the same internet provided at/from the uni, but at home i'm a biiigggg downloader, so i'm unsure if i'll be able to go without downloading all my tv shows/music/movies(sad i know)
2. how much on average would accommodation cost per semester or year? Yes i know there are prices for the various ones on the website, but i am aware the semester structure/holidays and whatever vary between diff unis and of course high school, so i wasn't quite able to work it out. Do most people just stay during the semester and go home in the holidays? so is the payment a fixed amount or something(say semester) or does it(or can) include holidays?

So yeah, just inquiring I guess..thanks to anyone who's bothered to read and answer my Qs

Internet is excellent. All torrent sites are blocked by proxy, so that's a no go. However, in the residences, students trade everything through public networks. Everything you could want, latest movies, tv shows etc... Download speeds are 700kb/s.

I think it worked out a bit more than $5000 a year, yeah you pay for mid semester break. Not many people stay between semesters.

There's a massive shortage of rental property, there always has been. I've heard many stories of extortion like behaviour by real estate agents who take advantage of this.

If you're not a local, you should start looking NOW to atleast get a feel of the market.

TBH evatt is pretty sweet.

How does having more azns, paying much more money for worse food, much less exposure to the fairer sex (boys don't like cooking), make IH better than Evatt?

Teds communal dining halls are better than IH facilities also.

I'm currently at IH,

You're looking at about $7000-$8000 a year in accommodation fees (approx $180 a week) although they are likely to go up.

In terms of "international students", International House has more, but they come from all over, US, Europe, not just Asia, and male/female ratio is the same in all colleges.

International House use the Edwards Hall dining facilities now also

and since they're apparrently in high demand..is it still worth applying for?
