If I was interested in studying an area in Physics or perhaps Nanotechnology, would MIT be the place to be? Also, does anyone know how hard it would be to get into it? From what I've seen in addition to extracurricular activities, am I right in assuming that I would only need around a 90% average in SAT exams or would I be incorrect? How competitive are the international students?

Yes MIT would be the place to be. You have to be pretty hardcore though, this is for the CERN types. If you can't get straight into MIT, you may have to do well in your physics undergrad here and then do postgrad there. Any serious physicist will be doin postgrad work anyway.

but CERN is mainly particle physics and nuclear physics, no place for nanotechnology...

funny signature...MIT is crazy to get into because the physicists/engineers go there. You'd have to do it for exchange.

Re: Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Oh, ok. Thanks guys for the info - upon doing research myself back around the time I posted this, I discovered that I'd probably not be able to afford the fees anyway - even with support, it is still expensive and I don't want to ask for help from my parents or anything.

Looks like I'm sticking here in Australia for now and maybe I'll do post grad study there as you said, hopefully I can build up some money through some sort of part time or casual work.

Re: Massachusetts Institute of Technology

90% for SAT is enough, but not enough for full scholarship...
If u can't get scholarship, the study fee for MIT is really high...
I know some Chinese students went for these top unis in USA with full scholarship...
The get nearly full marks for SAT, most of them even did GRE...
Hope u enjoy it~

MIT is a very hard school to get into. To give you a bigger picture... it is within the top 5 Universities in America.
Source: Couple of Friends attend MIT, one got a 36/36 on ACT another 35/36.
Good luck, work hard!

Re: Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Try CIT? While CIT isnt as famous as MIT but sometimes it out ranks MIT and the two schools really hate each other.

Re: Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Are you kidding?

Sorry to rain on parades, but MIT accepts 100-200 international students per year...from a pool of potentially larger than 2000!

You'd need a VERY high SAT or ACT mark, as well as nothing lower than 95 UAI. And lets not forget the fact that you need to have rock solid recommendation letters, a solid interview and the fact that american unis dont accept anyone unless they have extracurricular activities(unlike Australia where its like wow numbers, youre in UNI! lol)

Good Luck!

CIT is just as hard, it is only a small Uni. You guys needs to go to some american college forums to see how heavily the deck is stacked against us internationals in the states.

Well, dreams for undergrad at MIT are almost gone fo you I guess; unless you're a 100UAI kinda person. For graduate study..well you can decide that.
