I'm struggling with these questions (below) and have a hard time understanding this complex novel.

-How do Oriel and Dolly reach an understanding?
- Why does Lester need Sam as a friend and vice versa?
- Is Rose and Quick’s relationship destined, and why or why not?
- What does Fish directly teach various family members?
- What purpose do the minor characters serve in the novel?
- Why is each family important to the other, both practically and symbolically?
