Anyone know the rule for quoting the names of texts? Do i underline?, or use inverted commas? both? so many teachers have said exactly the opposite things.
Also, when I know the name of the composer, do i still have to refer to them as 'The composer'?

Inverted commas for poems and underline for everything else. This is what was written on my paper from the trials, so I do it like that all the time now. And i use composer, poet, etc. and name alternatively just so I'm not repeating the name over and over.

Underline anything that is published alone eg. books, plays
Use "double quotes" for anything that is published in a series / not alone eg. newspaper articles (underline newspaper names!), single poems, song titles etc.

If you know the name of the composer you can refer to them in any way you like just not colloquially:

"The composer of King Lear.."
"In King Lear, Shakespeare uses.."
"The text is brought into a new light by the author.."
"William Shakespeare's history is alluded to.."

Never EVER use their first name ('William, who wrote King Lear') or spell their name incorrectly.

Anti, you rock. I knew a couple of those things, but I wasn't sure about songs and poems.

Anyways, what if we call Shakespeare "Bill"?

Just to clarify, do we underline movies?
Judging by the answers given, id say yes.
However more often than not i see movies in quotation marks

No! It's bad style to underline everything
Movies are underlined. If you're mentioning a tv series you'd use quotes for each episode, but underline the title (eg. "Smaller Fish To Fry", Frontline)

from waht my teachers have stated, after tehy marked our english exams in which almost everyone failed. they said to not keep repeating 'composer,' even if its a poet. they said, it could be marked wrong, and just to make it a point, i think some were marked down because of that.

did they get marked down just for being too repetitive??

is your teacher saying you should use the composer's name more often?

Re: The little things

I didn't want to make a whole new topic for this question. One of my related texts is an untitled photograph. I'm thinking that the first time I refer to it I'll call it 'Composer's photograph of such and such' and from then on just refer to it as 'Composer's photograph'. Would this be okay? And do I need to underline anything?
