Clinical depression is a severe form of depression. The sadness, clinical depression brings, overwhelms threatening too drown you in emotion. You suddenly find you cannot perform the simplest of tasks; writing a grocery list, taking your child to soccer practice are jobs you cannot possibly comprehend.
 
Clinical depression is a lasting depression. It can hang on for weeks, months, even years. The symptoms of clinical depression are the same for severe depression or manic depression: 
*Your ability to function in your everyday world ceases. 
*You are caught in the grip of paralyzing fear. 
*You worry incessantly about everything. 
*Your performance at work/school drops off. 
*Your sleep pattern is disrupted. 
*You avoid contact with family and friends, preferring to hide away in a darkened room where you unsuccessfully try to manage your thoughts. 
*You experience significant weight loss or other eating disorders. 
*You cannot concentrate.
*You feel worthless and insignificant. 


So basically, my questions are:

1. If i had these symptoms should i go talk to a councellor?
2. Would it impact on your hsc if you had clinical depression, and can you claim "compensation" (insert better word) if your marks are affected by the illness?
3. Is it better to:
a). Go talk to a doctor/councellor
b). Go on anti-depressant meds
c). Do both
Note: i'd prefer if i got proper answer from those who have had previous experience or actually know relevant info on this topic.

c. you can try both, i have, personally i find the drugs help me a lot but everyone's different.

well currently i'm deep in clinical depression.
on anti depressants right now. have been for a week.

check up with your general practitioner first.
thats the first step. thats the hardest step.

the rest is just going with the flow.

a. Go to a doctor. Get a referral to a counsellor. Try that first, and consider medication down the track.
Anti Depressants are overprescribed in Australia. I honestly think that counselling should be the first step... and that medication should only be prescribed if this is ineffective.
