    Red face Nursing—any questions?

On the off chance that anyone stumbles across this forum... I'm in my final year of a combined Science/Nursing degree (2014–2017). If you have any questions (especially regarding nursing, since there are a bunch of science people around on these forums), feel free to use this thread to ask.

    Hello

I really want to do a Bachelor of Nursing at University of Sydney but I am not really sure what this course entails or what I should expect. Could you please provide me with an idea?

    Hey!

You get placements every now and then according to the academic schedule.

If you are just deciding which uni to go to, I reckon you can also compare the affiliation and certificates you can get after graduation.

you should do more research in different universities too

Hi! There is no Bachelor of Nursing at USyd. There is a Master of Nursing, entry to which is based on having previously completed an undergraduate degree (in anything), or you can combine the Master with a Bachelor while studying at USyd.

The course is not demanding in the first year, but expectations will become higher in the second year. You will study medications, biology and pathology of different body systems and related disease processes, illness experience, perioperative care, high acuity and chronic care, mental health, community care, etc. Most classes will have a lecture and a tutorial, approximatey half your classes each semester will have an additional hands-on lab. Assessments take the form of: essays, literature reviews, quizzes, exams, presentations, group work, and simulation-based assessments on practical skills.

During each semester you will attend nursing placements, for ~800 hours over the course of the degree (which is twice that of places like Newcastle university). They usually run for two weeks. In your final semester you will be able to pick a specialty area, and the placement for this will run for four weeks. Placements are based on your address (they try not to make you travel too far, but sometimes, given the limited amount of spaces, you will have to travel a little). If you are a Master-only student your placements will take place during semester as much as possible. If you are a combined student, because you have classes after the nursing semester has finished, you may have placements during university holidays.

    For me...
Pros: I did combined Ba/M and picked up an extra degree (science, major: anatomy and histology) in a reduced timeframe, the science degree really helped support my nursing studies and honed my writing skills, the campus is easy to access and all classes are in the same few buildings, exams were easy, marks were usually spread out across the semester.
Cons: the nursing department can be disorganised, the campus is starting to get old, sometimes you have to travel 2 hours (one way) to a placement, some of the lecturers are very poor.
