So, what really is a critical study?

my class was doing the text Othello for our critical study unit. she said that all we needed to do was to find two readings of the play and find quotes or other features of the play to support them. When i got my exam question, it had nothing to do with readings but rather a main character's involvement in two critical incidents and how people in the text viewed them differently. so obviously "readings" isn't all to them.

Could someone please explain what a "critical reading" is about and what must you focus on

Thanks in advanced
