I recently got my IRP assignment, and i'm not sure on what my focus question should be because I feel like the topic I want to do is really broad and that I won't be able to have a lot of information. I want to do something about the influences on self-esteem, like social media, magazines.

The best way to narrow it down is to pick an age group, culture or even gender to work with.
If you pick something specific like that you can compare it
For example my broad area was same sex marriage
I narrowed it to compare opinions of Caucasian Australians vs. the opinions of Indian individuals
It seems you've picked emotional wellbeing as your main aspect through self esteem, from there pick your group and perhaps compare how each source of media influences their emotional wellbeing and to what extent do they do so
