Hey folks,

I hope everyone is keeping well.

I was just wondering if someone could please possibly help me with my CAFS assessment.

It is on parenting and caring and it is a hand-in media review task.

I was just wondering if someone could give marks to my responses based upon the marking criteria attached and give me some feedback please?

It would be very appreciated thanks:)

1. Describe the impact of community beliefs and attitudes on adoption and fostering in Australia. (4 marks)

Adoption is a legal process where all legal rights and responsibilities of biological parents are transferred to non-biological parents and fostering is the process of providing alternate living arrangements to children whose parents are temporarily unable to care for them.

There has been an improvement in beliefs and attitudes on adoption and fostering within the Australian community. Before the twentieth century, adoption was socially stigmatised because it was believed that institutionalised and abandoned children came from ‘inferior’ backgrounds and were viewed as a bad omen. However, today, most people view adoption as rewarding. This is evident in an article in The Telegraph which makes reference to a survey by an organisation called Adopt Change, “It is found that more than 80 per cent of Australians think that adoption is positive and that it gives children an opportunity they wouldn’t have otherwise”. The article further proves the communal perception of fostering, as an opportunity for children to leave unsafe homes, “For these children, adoption is their chance at finding a permanent, safe and loving family”. However, the article states there were only 317 children adopted in Australia from 2013-2014. This is due to the government’s concern about the ability of adoptions to traumatize children, when they find out about the absence of biological parents, as the article mentions, “Up until now, the attitudes of Australians towards adoption have not been well understood, allowing adoption to be seen as something of a political hot potato...”.

Overall, Australian attitudes towards adoption and fostering have improved. People perceive them to be charitable as they involve the caring of children separated from their biological parents. Thus, it is socially acceptable. However, the long and exhaustive process of adoption and fostering, established by the Australian government, due to a concern for the children’s wellbeing has hindered people’s willingness to adopt and has prevented adoption rates from increasing.

2. How can carers fulfil their roles in a way that promotes the wellbeing of their dependants? (6 marks)
How can carers fulfil their role of promoting the wellbeing of their dependants?

Carers can promote the wellbeing of their dependants by addressing their health concerns and by providing them with emotional support if they are going through challenging situations.

Carers can promote the physical wellbeing of their dependants by addressing their health concerns by seeking medical attention for them and by looking after their physical and medical needs. This is because the dependant is able to manage their illness or disability in a very resilient manner as they are able to access direct physical support and care. This is elaborated upon in an article in THE WEST AUSTRALIAN newspaper which shares the experiences of an elderly man named Vincent, who was diagnosed with motor-neurone disease. It shares his experiences of accessing support from an occupational therapist through the Motor Neurone Disease Association, “The Association also provided an occupational therapist who helped them look after practical needs such as such as how to fit out the house to accommodate Vincent’s changing needs”. Thus, it has been shown that carers can assist dependants to manage health concerns, such as motor-neurone disease, by seeking professional help for them. This will help them to reduce physical barriers in dependants like immobility and thus the dependant’s physical wellbeing will improve. This is because the dependant is able to cope with their health issues confidently as they receive the required physical and medical support to improve their condition.

Furthermore, carers can provide emotional support to the dependant, during challenging situations, by showing affection to them and offering advice, to allow the dependant to develop self-resilience. This can allow dependants to deal with everyday challenges in a more confident manner as they feel supported by others and less isolated. This is further explained in THE WEST AUSTRALIAN article which shares Vincent’s joy of being supported by his wife Kathleen and other family members like his older daughter, “They have been very supportive all along. They phone, they email, they come up whenever they can”. This shows how emotional support, through means such as checking upon the dependant, whilst they deal with challenges like poor health, can enable the dependant to experience positive emotional wellbeing. This is because they are able to have a high sense of self-esteem and self-confidence from being able to manage their difficulties. This also reduces social isolation.

Overall, carers can promote the emotional wellbeing of dependants by seeking professional help for them to address any health concerns. They can also provide physical and medical assistance at home to help them to manage and recover from illness. Furthermore, the provision of emotional support can enable them to handle everyday challenges in a more resilient manner. This can allow for increased self-esteem and self-confidence.

3. Analyse how the culture, customs and traditions of parents can influence their parenting. (8 marks)
Culture, customs and traditions of parents can influence the way they raise their child. Culture refers to the attitudes, beliefs and customs that characterise a certain group of people. Customs refer to the acceptable behaviours, actions, beliefs and ideas within a culture and traditions are customs and beliefs that have been transmitted over generations within a culture.

Culture can determine a parent’s way of disciplining and caring for their child in order to prepare them for the independence of adulthood. It can influence a parent’s need to control their child’s actions and decisions. This is explored in an online article in the website how to (adult) about the beliefs, customs and values of Chinese parents, “Chinese parents are more likely to use a more controlling and less responsive parenting style. This parenting style puts the parent as a strong authority figure and child as something of a subject to the parent”. Thus, the prevalence of authoritarian and non-permissive parenting in Chinese culture has influenced people to raise their child the same way, under the belief that it will prevent their child from doing wrong actions and participating in bad behaviours. Overall, culture can influence a parent’s way of disciplining their child because it provides the basic framework for right and wrong behaviours in social situations. This can enhance the parent’s emotional wellbeing because they are able to easily discipline and control their child’s behaviour under the influence of previous upbringing within a traditional household.

Furthermore, customs can influence the way that parents socialize their children and prepare them to be independent within their society. Certain cultural customs can prevent parents from allowing their child to be prepared for the challenges of the real world. This is further elaborated upon in the article from how to (adult) about Chinese parenting, “Parents take on most of the responsibility until the child has found a husband or wife. Depending on the age of marriage, this could mean that the child relies on her parents up to the age of 30”. Thus, the Chinese social custom of looking after children until they get married has influenced parents to constantly care for and meet their child’s needs regardless of age and employment status. This can enhance a parent’s emotional wellbeing because they are able to constantly ensure their child’s safety and security even after reaching adulthood. However, it could have a negative impact upon the child’s social wellbeing due to the excessive protection that they receive from parents, even during adulthood; this can prevent their child from socializing well with others in the workplace.

Traditions can further influence a parent’s way of instilling cultural and religious values such as family loyalty into their children. This allows the child to feel stable in life and understand their culture better. This can enhance their cultural wellbeing by allowing them to have a positive appreciation towards their identity, later on, when they grow up. For example, the article on how to (adult) shares the Chinese tradition of worshipping ancestors, “Chinese ancestor worship shows the Chinese connection to family, even after death”. Thus, this allows the parent to emphasize the Chinese value of being loyal and obedient to one’s own parents even after their parents’ death. Thus, traditions can influence a parent’s way of teaching their child appropriate behaviours and customs that align with the social beliefs and values of their culture and religion. This can enhance the parent’s emotional wellbeing as they are able to retain a strong connection with their child based on the passing down of cultural customs and practices.

Ultimately, culture, customs and traditions can influence a parent’s way of socialising their child and teaching them right and wrong behaviours as they provide the framework for the social values and beliefs of parents.
