I turned away from my paper for no more than a minute in the reserve section to photocopy a couple of pages. Lo and behold, some wanker stole my about 20 sources worth of my photocopies. Those photocopies were a week of going through crap like Cicero, Plutarch, Livy, etc. ... People are assholes. The general story - the journalist records his perplexity in regard to two verdicts delivered on the same day:

1. Two thieves who stole two rams were sentenced to 3 years imprisonment and 1,000 lashes.
   
   So you'd expect anything worse than stealing two goats to be punished pretty badly, right?
2. A man who beat his wife to death received 2 years imprisonment and 200 lashes.

Patricia Crone Ph.D is a scholar, author and historian of early Islamic history working at the Institute for Advanced Study. A prolific writer, she established herself as a major challenge to the established narrative of the early history of Islam. She has studied and taught at a range of institutions including the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies, Oxford University and Cambridge University.

My favourite works of hers:

Christoph Luxenberg

Christoph Luxenberg is a German scholar and professor of ancient Semitic and Arabic languages. He challenges the development of the Quran from the premise that the Aramiaic language was prevalent throughout the Middle East at the time of the development of the Quran. His research has led to the belief that Syriac Christian liturgy has had a profound influence on the composition and understanding of the Quran.

Awesome book outlining his thesis:

• Die Syro-Aramaische Lesart des Koran: Ein Beitrag zur Entschlusselung der Koransprache (2004). A version of the 2000 edition was translated to English (with some editions) as Syro-Aramaic Reading of the Koran: A Contribution to the Decoding of the Koran (2007).

I would also love to read some of his German essays regarding the debate at the Advanced Institute and his reinterpretation of Yehuda Nevo's findings.

Gerd R. Puin

Gerd Puin is a German scholar and an authority on Quranic paleography (the study and scholarly interpretation of ancient manuscripts.) His major achievement was his work in regard to the Sana'a manuscripts (the oldest Quranic manuscripts). He is contentious among Muslims as his studies in relation to the texts have lead him to the conclusion that Quran is cocktail of pre-Islamic Arab and contemporary texts. His conclusions are similar to Crone's but his approach was more palaeographic in nature.

His (coauthored) book has finally been translated to Enlgish but I am yet to actually get my hands on it. If someone could locate it in Australia I would love you long time. The book is:

• The Hidden Origins of Islam: New Research Into Its Early History (2008)
