“Emotions and relationships are central to our understanding of reality and our sense of who we are.”

Dr Mierzwiak, a scientist from New York is the inventor and designer of a new procedure that claims to erase fearful memories from the mind, with no unpleasant side affects. Lacuna Inc is a company that performs memory erasure of past events. Dr Mierzwiak believes the procedure can help people suffering from the emotional, after effects of traumatic experiences. In an interview Mierzwiak stated that, “Removing memories of deceased love ones, or heart breaking experiences allows my patients to live normally without the wretched feelings associated with disturbing events.” Is this a miracle, or theft? There is great argument surrounding the procedure, claiming that removing memories of relationships and emotions we once felt alter our realities and eliminate our sense of identity.

British experts have questioned the ethics of tampering with the mind and say that the technology and its proponents are a darkly villainous force seeking to control clients minds with little care or sensitivity. A group of researchers did a study on Lacuna Inc, revealing that the treatment of patients at Lacuna does not meet with national standards. Professor Neil Burgess of the institute of Cognitive Neuroscience in charge of the study made a statement about the procedure, sounding less then impressed.
“There is no room for pity and hesitation in this technology. The occupants of Lacuna’s crowded waiting room are offered no counseling and no effort is made to recognize or acknowledge their pain. Instead, the focus is on providing an easy solution and eradicating the problem entirely.”

While much of the controversy has been on patients’ rights and how technically safe it is for the brain, most of the uproar has been related to a change in personal identity, since, who we are is linked to our emotions and relationships. The values held by Lacuna employees are highly questionable. The mainly youthful workers appear to have no real understanding of the importance of human relationships and the emotions associated with them. Lacuna’s surreal memory erasure strategy involves hooking each individual’s brain patterns up to a jumble of wires and machines. Once the process is complete the patient is left with no memory of a past relationships or event.
