Terrorism in this part of the world usually means bombs exploding or hotels burning, as the latest horrific scenes from Mumbai attest.

Yet alongside the brutal public terrorism that fills the television screens, there is an equally cruel form of terrorism that gets almost no attention and thrives as a result: flinging acid on a woman’s face to leave her hideously deformed.

Here in Pakistan, I’ve been investigating such acid attacks, which are commonly used to terrorize and subjugate women and girls in a swath of Asia from

Afghanistan through Cambodia (men are almost never attacked with acid). Because women usually don’t matter in this part of the world, their attackers are rarely prosecuted and acid sales are usually not controlled.

It’s a kind of terrorism that becomes accepted as part of the background noise in the region.

                                                    KELLY BURKE CONSUMER AFFAIRS

November 21, 2009
IN A profession notoriously resilient to hard times, online dating sites threaten to do what the global financial crisis could not - send the sex services industry broke.
The $1.2 billion industry has bled $74 million over the past financial year, with brothels taking the hardest hit. In contrast, the market for exotic dancers and strippers, albeit starting from a small base, has steadily grown.
Sex is up there with tobacco and alcohol, according to the independent business information analyst IBISWorld. Recessions and depressions appear to have little impact on abstinence.
But while prostitution has proven through the ages to have the stamina to withstand the vagaries of the economic climate, the digital age may prove to be the profession's nemesis.
A senior analyst at IBISWorld, Edward Butler, who used industry surveys and Australian Bureau of Statistics data to crunch the numbers, said the 6 per cent contraction the sex industry experienced in the last financial year was most likely attributable to the surge in online dating sites which allow people to be frank about their penchant for casual sex.
''It's not the most precise science compared to other industries,'' said Mr Butler, who conceded the project was probably the most unusual he has tackled in his economics career.
''We've had to be more intuitive, but we're pretty confident of the results. The rapid growth in online services means it has never been easier for like-minded individuals to organise casual liaisons for little or no cost.''
About 1.5 million Australians now have accounts with sites such as RSVP, LavaLife and eHarmony, the majority expressing the intention of finding a long-term relationship.
A ''casual liaisons'' community set up by RSVP (owned by Fairfax Media, publisher of the Herald) six months ago now has more than 1600 members, but that pales in comparison to many of the website's other niche communities, such as Christian singles, with more than 7000 members, and ''Tradie For a Lady'' (more than 10,000).
But other sites which are more upfront about their purpose, such as FlingFinder, adultmatchmaker.com.au and benaughty.com are proliferating. Such claims as having more than 4 million members were patently ridiculous, Mr Butler said, but they were clearly having an impact on the traditional sex industry's trade.
The Adult Business Association of NSW's spokesman, Chris Seage, said he was surprised the drop in revenue had been only 6 per cent in the past year.
''Brothels aren't the goldmine they used to be 10 or 20 years ago,'' he said. ''The regular punters aren't coming as often. Rather than weekly, they're coming fortnightly or monthly and they're also cutting down on time, opting for the half-hour instead of the full hour.''
Mr Seage said the industry as a whole had not identified the growing popularity of casual sex websites as a problem.
''But I believe it is having an effect on trading. It's a lot cheaper to hook on a matchmaker site, pay a much smaller fee and engage in casual sex that way. It's an emerging issue for the industry.''
''Lee'', the manager of La Petite Aroma in Chatswood, is not buying Mr Butler's theory. She is convinced the drop in her business is due to the growing number of illegal establishments sprouting up in her local area.
''They don't pay tax and they're exploiting our industry,'' she said. ''They're putting a lot of genuine people out of business.''

Auburn riot fears halt raids, police say

Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione has denied being involved in ordering a postponement of a raid in Auburn last week in which a man was arrested allegedly carrying a gun and drugs.
Commissioner Scipione said the decision had been taken by local commanders who had to carry out a risk assessment before the raid.
‘‘They also ensure that the operation is conducted in a way that maximises the margins for safety so that our officers aren’t becoming victims of crimes as a result of an operation that may as well have been executed more efficiently at another time.’’
‘‘The operational commanders that had responsibility for that particular matter did their job, did it well, professionally, got the outcome they desired.’’
‘‘I haven’t got any issues. I didn’t communicate with anyone with regards to any concerns or any worries because I didn’t have any.’’
‘‘I didn’t order any postponement. I don’t have any concerns,’’ he said.
Several officers have told the Herald they are being forced to delay raids looking for guns and drugs because the NSW Police Force executive is fearful of the negative publicity that would result from a riot in the area.
In early September, officers from the Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad raided four houses in Auburn and a large crowd gathered to watch. Senior police were concerned about the potential for violence and called the riot squad.
Three people were arrested for allegedly assaulting police, but officers say the incident was far from a riot. ''It was a couple of kids throwing rocks,'' one said.
A raid last week on an Auburn man in which officers were looking for a handgun and drugs was delayed at least 12 hours - leaving the man with a deadly weapon for another night - because the riot squad and the tactical operations unit were not available.
''Here's a bloke who's got a gun. Carries it. And we've got the warrants to take it off him but we had to wait. We had to wait only for concern about adverse publicity, not because of concerns for our officers' safety,'' one officer said.
So intense is the scrutiny, one relatively junior officer received an email straight from the Commissioner of Police, Andrew Scipione, asking about the raid.
They are frustrated that the riot squad is not always available - it doesn't work Monday or Tuesday - and they are forced to delay critical raids. ''It's riot by appointment,'' one officer said.
But the commander of the Middle Eastern Crime Squad, Deb Wallace, said the riot squad's unavailability was not the only reason the raid was delayed.
''The operation was delayed by a day for a variety of operation reasons, not just the decision to involve [the public order and riot squad],'' she said. ''It was a highly successful operation that went off without incident.''
The raid on the Auburn man was the latest in a series to try to keep a lid on simmering local tensions between two crime groups.
Police have expressed concern the feud between the Parramatta chapter of the Bandidos Motorcycle Club and the street gang Notorious may erupt again.
Last summer there were several drive-by shootings in south-western and western Sydney believed to be related to that feud. It culminated in a gun battle in Auburn in March, with dozens of bullets hitting houses.
A 41-YEAR-OLD woman who had sex with a 14-year-old boy during a drinking binge has avoided a jail term.
Jenny Lee Mitchell had sex with a 17-year-old boy and then his 14-year-old friend after they had spent the night out drinking between February and March last year.
Victorian County Court heard she was very drunk and had little memory of what happened.
Judge Howard Mason said her drunken state explains her behaviour but did not excuse it.
But he said her appalling history of neglect and abuse, psychological problems and her alcohol dependence after being weaned off pain medication, and otherwise good character made for exceptional circumstances.
Mitchell, of Sebastopol in Ballarat, pleaded guilty to one count of sexually penetrating a child under 16.
Judge Mason sentenced her to two years' jail, with the sentence wholly suspended.
Mitchell, who sobbed as she was sentenced, will be registered as a sex offender for 15 years

So as of late I've been noticing a rising trend of anti-semitism. Regardless of the conspiracy, world event, or just general frustation. It's always the Jews. I must admit it's unfamiliar territory, and has been intensifying as of late.

What I find most startling is that it's pretty widespread. Europeans, other whites, non muslim middle easterners, asians, etc. So who else has noticed this?

Caught copying in exam, student commits suicide

TNN 12 November 2009, 06:26am IST CHENNAI: A Class 10 student who was caught copying during an examination allegedly committed suicide by hanging at his residence in Uthandi. Terrified at the prospect of taking his parents to meet the headmaster of the school, the boy first drank a pesticide and then hanged himself using his mother's sari.

Police said that the boy's parents refused to lodge a complaint. They had cremated his body before informing the police.

According to the police, B Karthik (16), student of a school in Neelankarai, was caught by the invigilator while trying to copy during a term examination on Tuesday. Karthik, considered a bright student, was scolded by the teacher. She asked him why he had to copy when he could fare well in examination without doing so. She also told him to bring his parents the next day to meet the headmaster, the police said.

Acccording to the police, Karthik had apparently informed his parents about the incident and they assured him that they would help sort out the problem. However, the boy did not wait for that to happen.

Experts in child behaviour say that students have to be encouraged to talk about problems to get over anxiety and stress. Sneha, an organisation that works to prevent suicides by children, provides round-the-year programmes to enable schoolchildren cope with stress.

"Parents and children can call us at 24640050 for help. We get children to speak out about anything troubling them. What we discuss with children remains confidential and we do not disclose it with parents or teachers. Once they are able to talk aloud, they feel better. It's a pressure-cooker-like situation. If steam is let out then everything calms down," Shanti Chellappa, director, Sneha, told The Times Of India.

Andrew Grigoriou said yesterday he complained to the school and to police after his son Antonios was chased and later assaulted by Muslim students after a confrontation over the contents of his lunch.

Antonios, a Year 5 student of Greek-Australian background at Punchbowl Public School in Sydney's southwest, said he and a friend had to be locked inside the library for an hour after being chased by a group of Muslim boys offended by his choice of food while they were fasting.

The Grigoriou family said the following exchange took place:

Muslim student to Antonios: "Why are you eating ham, it's Ramadan?"

Antonios: "My mum packed this for lunch today."
FOR hours he stood chained outside a Sydney courthouse, waving an Australian flag and preaching his own kind of peace.

But self-styled Sheik Haron remains an accused man, charged with sending offensive mail to families of soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

Seizing upon the media attention at his first court appearance yesterday, Sheik Haron - who is named in court papers as Man Haron Monis - gave a virtual sermon outside the Downing Centre Local Court where he bizarrely made a plea to The Wiggles to help convey his message.

"The Wiggles love kids much more than some politicians," he said. "I want to ask The Wiggles to make a special show for Iraqi, Afghani and Australian kids that have lost their parents in war."

He asked The Wiggles to adapt their song Bear's Now Asleep to include Dad And Mum Now Asleep - for the children of war who "cannot see their parents".

Monis is charged with sending the offensive letters to the families of two soldiers who died in Afghanistan, and a letter to the family of a trade official who died in this year's Jakarta bombing.

The sheik's lawyer Chris Murphy told the court his client had been "preaching peace" and was "without a single blur" on his character.

Mr Murphy said the letters did not contain threats, adding: "He is a peace activist, I used to be one during Vietnam." Monis, 45, of Campsie, is charged with sending offensive material on November 27 and December 12, 2007, and on March 22, 2008, to the family of Private Luke Worsley who died in Afghanistan on November 23, 2007. He is also accused of sending such material on May 4, 6 and 7, 2008 to the family of soldier Jason Marks, who died in Afghanistan that month.

His seventh charge relates to sending a letter on July 27 this year to the family of recently killed Australian trade official Craig Senger.

His case was adjourned until January, and his reporting condition varied to just once a week after he surrendered his passport to authorities.

Outside court, Monis spoke in Arabic and English but refused to apologise for his letter-writing campaign.

He referred to a comment reportedly made by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd that he could not "stomach" the allegations against Monis.

"I ask Mr Kevin Rudd, did your stomach turn when you read the news about killing innocent Afghan civilians?" he said.

Exit International over an alleged assisted suicide.
Victorian detectives seized documents in Doncaster, in Melbourne's east, related to the June death of 76-year-old Brisbane man Frank Ward, of Clayfield.

The raids were carried out on behalf of Queensland detectives from Hendra, in Brisbane's north.

Dr Nitschke on Thursday denied that he or his organisation had had anything to do with the man's death but admitted Mr Ward had spoken with Exit International about ending his life.

We all say that many lebanese youths these days constitute a large problem. However, I beg you to ask yourselves whether this 'problem' is a temporary or long term social issue. For instance, during the 1980's, most of Australia was in an uproar over 'Vietnamese youths'. The Vietnamese formed massive gangs, and Cabramatta was a hotspot for drug crime. Now, however, they have calmed down, and in fact helped society to a large extent.

Do you reckon the (problematic) Lebanese of now will similarily calm down and become useful members of society?

Source: Veterans upset by Last Post ringtone - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Some veterans are furious about the Queensland RSL's "tasteless" decision to release a Last Post mobile phone ringtone for Remembrance Day.

Queensland RSL chief executive Chris McHugh says thousands of people have downloaded the ringtone, available online for a $2 donation.

"It's a good way of getting to young people to remind them of the significance of Remembrance Day, to remind people what Remembrance Day is all about," Mr McHugh said.

"And if we can use the media and modern technology to do that, it's the way to do it."

Mr McHugh says he is not concerned that people may think hearing the sombre Last Post on a mobile phone is disrespectful.

"We've had a lot of interest from people saying that's what they would like at this time of the year, to remind people of what had happened in the past because their concern was that a lot of young people had forgotten," he said.
But students surveyed by PM at the University of Technology in Sydney say they will not be downloading the ringtone.

"It's pretty bad, disrespect on the diggers and it's not on," one student said.
"It seems a bit weird doing it as a ringtone because it's so sacred and it brings back all the memories of lost soldiers and things like that," another student said.
"I think it's terrible."
"Should get a hip-hop remix of it... " a third student said.
Mr McHugh says the ringtone has been on sale for just over a week and the RSL has had thousands of downloads and no complaints.
He says it is an important fundraising strategy for the RSL.
"Everyone perceives the RSL as a bunch of big clubs and that's not us," he said.
"There's 84 RSL clubs in Queensland but there's 253 sub-branches.
"The majority of the sub-branches don't have RSL clubs to provide money, so we need to raise money in little country towns and fund small country towns and regional areas that don't have large clubs."

Tasteless

But president of the New South Wales Branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association, Clive Mitchell-Taylor, says the fundraising comes at too great a cost for ex-servicemen and women such as himself.
"I think it's absolutely tasteless and the RSL should know better," Mr Mitchell-Taylor said.

"In the bigger scheme of things you would think that the Last Post, given the symbology, would be one of the reserved symbols that the Government would control. Obviously that's not the case."

Mr Mitchell-Taylor says he hopes the RSL reconsiders its decision.

"I spent 44 years in the Army, and if I hear the Last Post, the hairs on my arms still stand up," he said.

"I understand that ex-service organizations have to raise funds, but I'd really like them to think this one through."
