Can confirm. I got a scholarship pretty much without any extracurricular activities.

That said, it does seem that generally it's easier to land a scholarship if you did do some extracurricular activitiess that you can talk about to some extent.

Oh really. Mind telling me how you did it? Was it based purely off academic results

It was about 60% academic results, 40% Advanced English articulation skills. Especially the latter. Trying to make your personal musical interest sound relevant to an Advanced Mathematics degree is right up Advanced English's alley.

For references, I also went to a public comprehensive high school (and two other peers received scholarship offers), so never rule yourself out of a scholarship attempt.

Re: does doing extracurricular activities really matter in high school

I think it depends which scholarship/cadetship... at least in the ones I've been involved with, I'd look for ECs or well roundedness beyond academics.

Re: does doing extracurricular activities really matter in high school

Key thing (in a scholarship/cadetship context) is that ECs give you braoder experiences than what you'd get in pure studies whether it be how to deal with conflict, how to handle stakeholders, how to inspire/lead, etc...

More time? I'm sure uni students are way busier than high school students since you all have a crap tonne of weekly work to do and getting hand cramps at the end of each semester due to excessive note taking and such

Recruiters want to see that you're busy, doing a lot outside, while maintaining a healthy work/study balance in high school. Therefore, EC activities play to some extent a factor when going for cadetships, not necessarily scholarships (case to case basis).

At school, you have exams once a year - at uni you have to cover more content in half the time, and you have exams twice a year

    etc.

but most of the time when people get hired for internships or full time jobs do employers really pay attention to your high school extracurriculars

it's early enough so that it'll be a factor if someone is looking at your extramural stuff

but wouldnt it be as relevant as the things you did in the first yr of uni as uni is more relevant

i mean people have different attitudes (i hope) in uni and in high school so i doubt employers would care that much for high school stuff
