Commuting from the Central Coast to UNSW?

    Hey everyone,

I'm considering going to UNSW to study Commerce/Arts and I currently live in Woy Woy on the Central Coast. It would take around an 1 hour and 45 minutes each way. I'm also interested in societies such as the UNSW Consulting Club which has training sessions every Monday night 6-8pm.

Would I be insane for attempting this? Would my health and social life suffer?

My other alternatives for unis would be UTS and Macquarie but I'm drawn to UNSW due to the prestige and the level of industry links and societies that they have.

Re: Commuting from the Central Coast to UNSW?

UNSW commerce ATAR is 96.50 another factor to consider.

How much closer would UTS or Macquarie be?

If you can sleep or study on your commute then it may help. Another thing is you could potentially do is watch lectures on the commute (assuming UNSW records them??).

If UNSW is like Macquarie then you'll be able to decrease your timetable into 2-3 days which means that you will not have to do the commute as much which will make it easier.

I personally wouldn't want to do the commute (plus the likelihood of delays for important events like exams) but people do similar and seem to be coping okay so you may be one of them.

I don't even think I'll get the ATAR needed for UNSW Commerce straight away so I was planning on doing Arts and then transferring into Commerce/Arts. Commerce/Arts is 4 years so you have extra time to build up your resume through societies and work experience.

Woy Woy to UTS is 1hr and 30 minutes. Macquarie is 1hr and 16 minutes.

Yeah fair enough, the bus is the most annoying thing with how far UNSW is from Central Station. I like travelling on public transport so hopefully i should be good there.

Honestly even people who live in Sydney spend that long on commute to unsw. I think as long as the trains are reliable there shouldn't be a problem. That bei said I would highly recommend another uni that doesn't have the trimester system

Macquarie's the only option on the list without trimesters.

Re: Commuting from the Central Coast to UNSW?

I would highly recommend moving closer to uni to study.

your 1.5hr commute each way will add up

say your commute is 3hours/day and you come to uni for 3-4 days adds up to 9-12hours/week

you can use that time instead to find a job close to uni at say $22/hr you can make $200-$260/week which would easily cover rent + centerlink benefits

a really good job in terms of helping you succeed in your career path or just a really good part time job?

if it is the latter you got to weigh up weather it is worth staying in that job that won't really have a positive effect on your career except for 1 good reference

16k people take the 891 on a typical semester day: https://www.estate.unsw.edu.au/sites...eyAnalysis.pdf

and the light rail has the capacity to move like 4k people/hour

this will be a light rail wreck

It's pretty well-paid and a really good job for a student to have in first year. It would be great experience for my future career but isn't business related tho.

I honestly know sooo many people that live out west with me, and even further (takes them 2 hours). When you start uni it's pretty hard to adjust imo, but after your first sem you just get used to it and it becomes routine. You won't be a minority
