HSC, didn't order raw marks report so don't know.

how did you go about studying for english and making sure your essay answered the question in the exam?

write a generic essay - such as the ones that I've formulated.
constantly get it marked and drafted throughout the year by many peers, teachers, coordinators etc until it is an A-range essay type.
memorise the essay.

practice essay on different questions from trial papers, past hsc's etc
through practice comes the ability to understand how to structure your essay and utilise your generic essay to suit different questions.
