Money is a factor driving everyones career choice, if it wasnt, most people would just pick the easiest job possible. When people say "they arent doing medicine for the money", they mean that money isnt their primary reason for choosing med. Money is a fact of life and financial security is very important especially when you have a family - so you need to give it some consideration when chosing a career. What my point was before is that people shouldnt choose med solely for the money, because it is extremely difficult to do if you dont have a passion for it.

Being a naive 17 year old at the time, I did it for more of an ego thing cuz I had the grades. Honestly, would u do arts if u had 99.95 atar and 100 umat just cos u have an "interest" in it? No, u do something that will put food on the table and a roof over your head. In this case, 10 course meals an mansions. Also, doctors get all the bitches.

Obviously people have to pursue this career, otherwise we would never develop in terms of medical stuff. However how anyone has an interest in this career is beyond me. I honestly believe some of those who choose it, are only doing it because they have a 99.95 ATAR and don't want to waste it. Some say oh my 6 figure salary. But the higher salary you recieve the more tax gets deducted (Wrong i know) so ultimately you are not too far ahead of others in terms of wages.

I was going to take Biomedical Science, with the possibility of taking on Medicine after, but felt it would be a novelty factor with no real interest of mine. I had the idea of glorifying it, going oh i could find the cure to Cancer, etc, but it would never happen. Also the work, and commitment you have to do is unbelievable. For example, a family relative of mine (not immediate) is involved in some medical stuff as both a consultant/surgeon (really high) position, but they go to work at like 4.00am and don't get back until about 7ish in the evening. Money is not everything to be honest. Happiness is, and when you have a really crap work to life ratio, is it really worth it?

doctors donot find cures for diseases that is the job of a researcher who normally gets a bsci and a phd specialising in cancer research

Some do. "Doctor" is a job, "Medicine" is the course you study - not everyone who studies medicine becomes a clinician.

Honestly, a lot of the people in this thread have as many misconceptions about medicine as they accuse others of.

SOME people do medicine (mistakenly IMO) for money and SOME people do it for personal or altruistic reasons. More likely, like most disease processes, the want to study medicine is a multifactoral process; not that one isn't more important than another but that everything comes into consideration. As long as they turn out to become a competent doctor then it really doesn't matter why they did it.

I beg to differ. If you are in med for the money, you will make the money. 7 figures no sweat.
And you make it sound like being a partner in a firm is easy, its as hard if not harder than becoming a doctor.

I have a GENUINE passion for it! Wanted to become a doctor since I was 5 years old.

Umm, actually, you can do research after post-grad or masters..
I want to be: Oncologist (specialist and surgeon), medical author and cancer researcher

imo 90-95% of people doing med are in it for the money, prestige or because my parents are pressuring me to. passion and a love for science are all secondary factors for these people, not their primary reason for studying med.
