i went to the formal with no date because well... we weren't allowed because the first (and last) year that was allowed to bring out-of-cohort dates almost made it descend into a drunken brawl

You know what..... my school formal, we can't bring people from outside of school (We have 300 year 12's at my school, and its a year 11-12 school). Point is for me, get really pissed then show up.
