    Employers biased against some Uni's

    Hi,

I was thinking about my career options and what I want to do in Uni. My first preference would be either UNSW or USYD. However, I am worried I may not get the ATAR required for it. I have heard that employers prefer graduates from the 'top' universities such as UNSW and that they mostly disregard students from Uni's such as UWS. This also what my close relatives have said who work for private institution from personal experience. So I do think there is some credibility to this point.

So what are your opinions about it?

Please note that I'm not trying to insult students who go to UWS, I just used them as an example.

Seriously I need some genuine responses - from people who actually have some experience.

At places like UNSW, what often happens is that you will have chances you have internships with businesses etc.

SO unless you want to enter the public servent sector, graduating at UWS won't help.

It doesn't mean getting into first yesar UWS and tranferring is bad to UNSW isn't bad, hence actually you should.
    um...what would you know?

I haven't actually decided, but the few that do look enticing require over 98%. (at UNSW)

    So?

I am assuming this would be USYD or UNSW.

Get into Macquarie or something. Do a year then transfer

I'm talking about worst case scenario. Let's say I require an ATAR of 99+ (at UNSW) but I get 94, then the only option for me will be UWS for that course.

Most are USYD and UNSW. However a few are UWS and even they say its shit (The UWS ones average D's and HD's so they aren't drop kicks to say)

If it isn't Law or Coop, you can get extra bonus points from HSC plus and Being the top atar student to go to UNSW

So in theory you could get in with 88

They're pretty diverse fields. Do you know which one in particular?

The top ATAR mark bonus marks dont get excluded

Hence you can get in with 93, and you said you might get 94

    Problem solved.

Also, FYI for med, at the current state we are so short in numbers it doens't matter

The first to cut from the list would be aeronautical engineering simply due to job demand in Aus. Med depends on UMAT I guess. Psychology requires less ATAR than LAW. So it depends on the ATAR I get.

Tbh I initially put UNSW as my first preference, but got into UWS which was my 2nd preference.

Having spent almost a semester doing my course at UWS I say with the utmost sincerity that I would have put it as my 1st preference if I knew I would be enjoying it this much.

    Using a iphone sorry

If you go to UNSW and you have the Highest ATAR from your school (Of all the kids who go to UNSW- do you don't need to be dux) you get an extra 5 ATAR points plus $4k

So basically you can get in any course with 5 lower points. (And you said you could get 94, hence problem solved)

Also Harrissony, why did you neg me

Re: Employers biased against some Uni's

The statement in the OP is credible. Lets take a scenario where you have two candidates (whose personalities are both likeable), one from Yale university (one of the best in America) and the other from Oklahoma Community College - it wouldn't be a hard decision for most people to make. It is the same with UNSW or USYD versus University of Western Sydney, Charles Sturt University, Notre Dame University, Southern Cross University etc...

UNSW/USYD are regarded as more competitive and better institutions by industry.

Although if you want to do medicine or whatever it is better to do it (at UWS if you have to) than to not do it at all.
