Hi, i was curious to know if this is correct:

If you're coming first in a particular subject such as say Maths Ext 1 and in the hsc you bomb out. Does this impact on you? As I've heard that if your final rank is 1 then whoever in your grade who does that subject gets the highest mark in your school then you get their mark. Is this true?

Your final mark is split 50/50 into the mark you attain in the final exam as well as a mark based on your ranking from all the school assessments you have throughout year 12. So yes, if you bombed out in the HSC it would affect you.

As for the second part of your question, you will get the best mark from your school if you are rank 1, but thats only 50% of your total score, the other is from your performance during the final hsc exam.

I'm sure others will be able to explain it better, I always end up getting it wrong somewhere =)

thief pretty muc hit the nail on the head. Even if you are ranked 1st, if you bomb out in your externals, that means you're bombing out on 50% of your final hsc mark. As Thief said, your final hsc mark is the average of your internal assessment mark (the mark that corresponds to your rank in that subject in school i.e. if you came 1st, then its the top mark attained by your school in that subject) and your external assessment mark (the mark you get in the hsc exam)
