    no,

the person who is ranked 3rd doesn't get the 3rd highest mark...

there is a formula to calculate what the person who came third will get, it depends on how the
    class goes as a whole.

however, as a very rough guide, yes the person who cam third will get approxmately what the 3rd highest Exam mark as their moderated assessment mark.

if you get the 3rd highest mark for your HSC exam, you keep that mark as your exam mark and no one can take it away from you.

    Raw Or Scaled

is the "aligned HSC mark" scaled or raw??? for example, i wish to put in my assessment marks to predict my UAI . my report has 43/50 for ext 1 maths which is SCALED by the school. should i enter this or try to estimate what RAW mark i will b getting? thanx

im getting all confused in this, if you go to just an ordinary school academically, you score marks that are around your UAI target in assesments and you HSC exams, what are the things that make your UAI go up or down? if your ranked worse than you should be can u still get a good UAI????
If im reincarnated i want to be the tablecloth, get layed and pulled off 3 times daily

So your HSC mark always gets scaled down. Like, if all my assesment averages are 60's, and i get 80's and 90's in my hsc, then im fucked. I dont like the sounds of it.
Watever happened to hsc marks getting scaled up. Like, my sisters 2 unit mark was scaled up to about 70 from a fail, in her hsc. And she had done pretty crap all year.

you can always have a look at JUAIseek instead of SAM, so not as much bandwidth is consumed

no, but it is as reliable as you can expect....

+/- 0.5 UAI for most marks

    prolly +/- 0.1 for UAI above 90

    ??

[QUOTE=warlivoecks]ITS IMPOSSIBLE IT ALLIGN UR MARK!!!!

my friend who got 99 last yr got an english adv assessment mark of 62, and a hsc exam mark of 97..that brought her "alligned mark" or actual mark to 93. Hence if u did shit all year, THERE IS STILL HOPE!!

I'm sorry, but do you mean she had an overall assessment mark of 62 (over the whole year) or just one assessment that got a mark of 62? It's just that i'm aiming for a UAI of roughly 99.8 and my English results sorta arn't adding up, like, they are averaging around 80...

Question does rank and assesment task really matter

i was jst enquiring to anyone who reallly understands the system. If my rank was last in particular subjects, but all students were ver close, and we all have reletivly good marks, what happens to the last place student???? Also if i was to be achieving 30% in for eg maths, and i get in the 80's in the HSC, what would happen to my marks?????

The last placed student will get the lowest HSC Exam mark as their School assessment mark.

    I don't understand your 2nd question...
your getting 30% in you school exams? And then you want to know what happens if you get 80% in the HSC exam?
Well all I can say if who know what will happen.... But you will have to work mighty hard to improve your marks. I guess you'll have a better idea after your trials.

Assessment tasks DO matter. However, the moderating process relies on ranks in both the external and internal assessments to alter marks. Your rank in the external exam within the school may be different to your rank in the school assessment tasks. If that is the case, then things start to get complicated.
Remember that chances are, that the moderating process would alter the original marks that the school submits.

ALIGNED MARKS ARE NOT USED FOR THE SCALING PROCESS!!!! I cannot emphasise this enough. In scaling the RAW MARKS are used. In most cases, these are lower than the ALIGNED marks. Since these marks are lower than the aligned marks, then the "scaling up" or the "scaling down" can apply.
The Board does not release these marks to the public, probably in fear that people would jump to ridiculous conclusions about the scaling of marks and pick subjects because they are scaled up.
Either way, when it comes to scaling, RANKS matter, NOT MARKS.

I dunno if this is a reliable way of doing things but what I did:

    - Examine the last few years' results from your school, and how many 90+ mentions there were in each subject, e.g. last year was a really, really, really, bad year for us but 76 got 90+ in English Advanced, and 96-ish got 90+ in 2U Maths. Fortuantely for me, our yaer is a good year and I'm ranked 55th and equal 10th in Eng Adv and 2U Maths respectively, so I inputted in 90 for both (to be on the safe side)
    - If no exact numbers are given, but the percentage of students who got a certain band and over is given, calculate that you're in the top xx% and work it out from there, e.g. last year, 70-something% of people got 80+ in Biology, and I'm in the top 30-ish%, so I should get at least 80 if not more for Bio.
    - And if nothing else, then Ii guess use the rest of the advice in this thread
