Students studying advanced maths across the state are being punished for taking on the more challenging HSC subject as the number of students studying no maths or general maths continues to grow.

that's only part of the issue tbh. the real crux imo is that maths education stems from the fucking terrible primary and junior high school curriculum, where students who initially are willing to learn are subjected to such atrocious teaching that it just demotivates them further and thus they're less likely to pick maths for their hsc

plus the fact that many teenagers still cannot calculate their basic BIDMAS is beyond me

but yeh, i agree - general maths getting an advantage over 2u is pretty crap

People think maths general is easier, thus it's easier to get a higher score in the exam >> higher atar.

MIF may be part of it, but it isn't central to the explanation.

They need to make primary and year 10 maths harder so the gap/transition to year 11 is easier.

If we do that, then people won't go ... 2U is fucking hard.

There are several factors behind this, and the list could go on and on. There's not really much incentive for students to choose advanced maths. In fact, some teachers even force students to drop to general maths, or drop completely. Pretty sure half my 2 unit cohort dropped to general. I think the teaching has a big impact as well. If a teacher knows his/her stuff, then they can explain it clearly to students which will enhance their understanding. But another problem is that some students simply can't be bothered - and it's hard to fix this problem tbh. So many people hate maths because they think it's hard, and it is. But it needs to be taught and explained in a way which is simple to understand. Mr Woo is a perfect example and I'm sure there are several other teachers just as terrific or even better.

100% True..I so agree...I legit was studying basic logic questions until yr 9..now I finally getting to harder algebra..and calculus

What is this article actually trying to say? The title is ''HSC maths: students studying advanced maths stung with lower marks in ATAR'', but it's not like they compare average ATAR of General Maths students to that of 2U Maths or anything. They also say ''on average general maths students were almost twice as likely to improve their results based on their corresponding year 10 school certificate data''. But what point are they trying to make by this? For all we know, this could actually be something that is only to be expected, e.g. people doing HSC General Maths may have done worse in their school certificates, which means on average there is more room for improvement for them compared to people who do 2U, making it more likely for them to improve.

(Plus, School Certificate is abolished now; last time it was done was in 2011.)
