    Question help

    I had a slightly different way of doing it P(-1)=18 P(2)=0 18=(-1)^2+a(-1)+b 18=1-a+b 17=-a+b equation A 0=2^2+2a+b -4=2a+b equation B subtract equation A -B 21=-3a a=-7 sub a=-7, 17=-(-7)+b b=24

    HSC 2017 MX2 Marathon (archive)

    Re: HSC 2017 MX2 Marathon i got an x+yi my x-component was : x = \pm (\sqrt{{\frac{5}{4}}+\frac{\sqrt{26}}{2}}) I haven't solved the y-component yet. Want to get 'x' right before I do the y.

Re: HSC 2017 MX2 Marathon I think my book has done another mistake. (The book has made a few mistakes so I'm just checking with people on here)

    HSC 2017 MX2 Marathon (archive)

    Re: HSC 2017 MX2 Marathon I spent 5 minutes on this and couldn't solve it. $ By writing z=x+yi, solve the following equations: $ z^2 = 5+i $ Ans: $ \pm \sqrt{\frac{\sqrt{26}+5}{2}}+ i \sqrt{\frac{\sqrt{26}-5}{2}}

    IB Maths Marathon

Q8b (i) (a+2i)(1+2i)=4-bi I think there was another mistake in the Cambridge textbook when going through complex numbers, if someone could confirm that would be great. I got a=8, b=-18 The books answer was: a=8, b=-24

    HSC 2017 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2017 MX2 Marathon Not sure if its me or the book error but I had a complex number question (6+i)(a+bi)=2 My solution for a= \frac{12}{37} \ and \ b =\frac{-2}{37} My book has a different solution to that.

    HSC 2017 MX1 Marathon

    Consider the five functions: f_{1} (x)=x \ f_{2} (x)=x^2 \ f_{3} (x)=1 \ f_{4} (x)=x^3+x \ f_{5} (x) = cos (x) +x^4 How many are even functions and how many are odd functions? I was a bit unsure about f_{3} (x) ?

    IB vs HSC

PROS of IB: * IB is more worldly recognised around the world in comparison to the HSC. * It seems to me like there is a huge private school element, which means heavier funding and possibly richer network to connect with. (and inter schools) CONS OF IB: * You can only take it once in your...

Time spent studying to get a distinction or high distinction average?

I think if your studying a mathematics course/unit, as much as I hate to say it, it does depend more on how much time you devote to the subject. It's a process that you work on over time that enables a student to develop structured responses. When I mention time, I include things like private...

Time spent studying to get a distinction or high distinction average?

I also reckon working is OK but I can understand how difficult it is to balance work and study . I wouldn't recommend working more than 25 hours a week, if you are doing a full time work load. I'm aware that people have costs and bills to pay but it does burn you out after a while.

Time spent studying to get a distinction or high distinction average?

I honestly reckon if you are after a HD in any uni subject you need to devote an hour minimum per night. 7 hours per unit per week. Other people will argue against that but thats my thinking anyway.

    HSC 2017 MX1 Marathon

I also do notice a huge overlap in 5.3 Maths Year 10 and Year 11 Prelim Extension 1 maths. (Trig, Circle Geometry, Polynomials in particular)

    HSC 2017 MX1 Marathon

Different books do it slightly differently for some reason. I did all of the Year 10 5.3 Questions (Congruency triangles & Circle Geometry) from Cambridge text book and they did it in the a chronological order. I also had a look at the Oxford textbook and their method of reasoning and the way...

    HSC 2017 MX1 Marathon

Just need a quick 'yes' or 'no. Would it be correct to say \angle ABC=\angle DEC $ (alternate angles, AB \parallel ED) $ ? \angle BAC=\angle EDC $ (alternate angles, AB \parallel ED) $ ? I want to get perfect with my reasoning in congruency of triangles.

Year 9-10 Maths Discussion & Resources

I also of am the opinion that it is hard to shift classes once you are in Year 9 and Year 10. I.e its hard for a kid to move up from Year 9 Stage 5.2 to Year 10 Stage 5.3 (it will be too much catch up) The schools don't want to tell it directly to your face either. The importance of doing well...
