The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

You're attempting to prove a general principle from a particular. Just because alcohol consumption from a young age is encouraged in Italy, doesn't mean that adopting similar practises here will effect similar results: in fact, it seems to effect the opposite. Just because gun ownership...

    Asian languages in primary schools

When I go overseas to somewhere like Japan or France pretty much ever person <30 can speak English. The reason that these people have learnt it from an early age is because there has been a recognition of the prominence of the english language throughout the world. Now that Asia is an...

Hey mate I don't mean to nitpick but to me the mens rea/actus reus guilt proof relies on a false dichotomy when applied to larger conflicts, namely, both sides killed, but that does not mean that the magnitude of each's guilt is equal, because one side killed far more. MR/AR is useful when...

    Wilson Tuckey.........

True, but we can at least clamour loudly. Besides I really meant it metaphorically, as in "Come on Australia! Lets boot this guy out of parliament the nice way - by voting the fucker out!" Not as in physically remove him or otherwise barring him from entering or w/e.

    The economics of Political Economy

Hey folks just a general question from someone who's probably going to pick this major next year: how much economics do you learn in political economy compared to the standard econ course? Is there much overlap between the two, or do you learn about completely different stuff? Cheers :)

Did you study in the Summer holidays?

I did not a shred of study in the summer holidays. I was concerned at the time that I was screwing myself over, but in retrospect it doesn't seem to have done too much damage. On the other hand - if you think it will help you and you are motivated, go for it! Personal preference, really.

SMH article on how shit is HSC English

I totally agree. You've just hit upon the big 'what if' of my argument: what if tutors etc prepare the responses? When this happens it should be frowned upon, and I think this is mostly what complicates the issue.

SMH article on how shit is HSC English

That's fair enough, and I should probably have said that there are certainly people out there who can manage it - you are a case in point. However, from my experience at school - which (not meaning to be snobby or anything) is a top 20 school, so our cohort is pretty strong - these people are...

SMH article on how shit is HSC English

I actually wrote a letter in to the SMH about this (not sure if they'll publish it though). I completely agree that writing decent responses 'off the cuff' is more or less impossible due to the time constraints involved. If I had 15 minutes, I would probably be fine to write a spontaneous...

\Israelis restrict Palestinians to <20 litres of water PER DAY!

Re: Fucker Israelis restrict Palestinians to <20 litres of water PER DAY! Well Israel had previously occupied the Sinai, which was Egyptian land. If you're talking Yom Kippur War, that is.

\Israelis restrict Palestinians to <20 litres of water PER DAY!

Re: Fucker Israelis restrict Palestinians to <20 litres of water PER DAY! We can't argue on speculation. Yes lots of rockets were fired, but only a scant few were killed, which is more important imo. There's a line in the sand that constitutes the difference between a reasonable and an...

    Criminalization of sexual acts

I'm pretty easy on this topic. Incest is sick and debased, but that shouldn't stop us from allowing people to do it. If you don't like it, you don't have to watch, basically. However, perhaps we should disallow them from giving birth to mutant, three-headed kids.

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

If I could offer some humble suggestions in response to this point..... Perhaps its not as clear cut as smacking > yelling, or whatever. I mean, there is some variability involved. Like, if you're screaming and yelling at your child, that is obviously going to be construed by them as more...
