What's the deal with tuts + workshops etc?

SECTE uses it's own system for some weird non-conformist reason. Go to: http://www.elec.uow.edu.au/cgi-bin/cea/lablist.pl?cmd=kkc_id and type in your Student ID, it should tell you the times you have enrolled in for tutorials and labs. Show up at these times at the locations it says. Oh and...

    Michelson and Morley or NOT?!

No, this is because the interferometer in the Michelson and Morley experiment merely tested interference patterns for light travelling over an equal distance but with the aparatus rotated at different angles. If the ether did exist, light would had to have acted mechanically in nature (and thus...

What electives do/did you do in yrs9/10?

A long time ago back in year 9 and 10 I did Technics Wood and Japanese. Back then Computer Studies was a compulsory subject atleast at our school (is it an elective now?).

I like or am doing physics because...?

Everyone has their likes and dislikes in life. I for one enjoyed the HSC Physics course (and continue to enjoy Physics at uni). How can you comment on the quality of the subject when you have only completed half of it? Most of the more interesting stuff came in the latter components of the course.

What's the deal with tuts + workshops etc?

"Damn"??? I did the same subject set back in Autumn of first year and I had to go everyday for 4 full days and then the afternoon on Thursday. You're very lucky if you're doing an engineering (or engineering physics) degree and don't end up with a 5 day uni week. Tuts right after a lecture...

    Scientia Courses

They hold a similar thing at UOW each year (and maybe at other Universities) called the Seimens Science Challenge. It's just a way of giving high school students a taste of what to expect of a science degree at a university level (and to obtain money from future degree enrolments). I never went...

Science- Student Research Project!?!? What should i experiment???

Back when I was in Year 10 (wow, a while ago now) I tested the relation between the relative salinity of adjacent sea water and sand from numerous source along the beach. To dissolve the sodium chloride from the sand samples, I put equal masses of sand into a beaker each with a controlled...

I like or am doing physics because...?

I find the history and background of Physics just as interesting as the pure science itself.

Who did i see today? plus other tales from 1st year wanderings

A guy I know from uni has parked in red carparks every day he's been at uni and is yet to receive a parking fine. I call it extreme luck. Another person I know got a parking fine the very first time they parked in the uni.

What's the deal with tuts + workshops etc?

You should receive SOLSmail messages on SOLS advising you tutorial/lab/whatever enrolment is imminent. I am not sure with Commerce as there is a much larger student base, but with Engineering, you do not enrol in lectures, you simply show up. For your engineering subjects (except electrical...

    physics and GAMSAT

Hmm, there are still hazardous chemicals information placards at the front of the UOW anatomy labs advising of formaldehyde being a Type I carcinogen. Whilst I know of atleast one fresh cadaver that was embalmed using methylated spirits; surely some older specimens would have been embalmed using...

    physics and GAMSAT

I really would enjoy doing function or regional anatomy, systemic anatomy was a lot of fun (ok, maybe the smell of the formaldehyde wasn't). I'll try to get a GAMSAT practise paper and see how scary it looks. Probably my biggest problem would be that I didn't do chemistry or biology for...

    physics and GAMSAT

Crap, I've got the opposite situation, I'm doing a MedPhys degree and I recently decided that I want to do a MBBS at the end of it. I've finished my first year, but I have not done any bio or chem. I guess I can do them in 3rd and 4th year (doing 10 subjects as it is in 2nd year yay for 1.25...

I like or am doing physics because...?

Not one of you liked physics??? :o I liked it so much that now I'm about to enter my 2nd year of a degree in it.

    string theory?

With regards to the Higg's boson, a few unaccounted for events observed whilst using the Large Electron Positron Collider at CERN may be noted as perhaps being caused by Higg's bosons. The Large Hadron Collider is currently under construction at CERN (I think it should be complete some time next...

    Stopsign's Physics Marathon

The re-entry angle must be very precise, too shallow and the craft will effectively "bounce off" the atmosphere, too steep and you have one barbequed space craft. Any critical strutures (particularly in the wing assuming we are talking about a re-usable craft) should be well thermally insulated...

    Who wants a 100 UAI?

This thread was a bit of a crack up. "The James Ruse experience" haha I've never even heard of James Ruse before. I reckon this Mushi guy must have done a fair bit worse in his HSC than his expected UAI of 100. I mean I went totally crap in my trials, but still got a reasonable HSC result and...

    Laptops in lectures?

Haha, yeah not particularly looking forward to those subjects. Getting even further off track, what average is required for honours class 1? (is it 78 or 80?)

    Laptops in lectures?

Haha you can always sit there sleeping. When we did the Thermodynamics component of PHYS141, every single week someone next to me fell asleep.

    Maths test on first day

If I remember correctly, it was just basic functions (know all your equality/inequality range symbols), integration/differentiation oh and go over your log laws. It's really simple.
